Adair Recycling Center closure hopefully temporary

By Linda Waggener

In the face of the Fiscal Court's closure of the Adair County Recycling Center in January, Bridget Compton is hoping it is only a temporary solution to budget problems. She will continue holding responsibility for Solid Waste since most of her responsibilities have been dealing with grants and taking care of the necessary reporting for the County.

She said, "It saddens me the recycling center had to be shut down temporarily. I hope in the upcoming fiscal year the budget allows it to reopen. So many within the community utilized the services of the recycling center and I was seeing growth and excited about getting a new vendor but then COVID hit right after our first pickup and we lost inmate labor which left one person tackling the day to day operations.

"The prices are literally pennies per pound and ton example (4 cents per lb. for PETE - plastic water and drink bottles). After the public's comments and suggestions to make cuts within in lieu of adding a tax the recycling center was the first to be closed since it has always been a service to better the community and not a profit or self-sustaining operation. I do want to personally thank all of the patrons who frequented the recycling center and kept tons of garbage out of our landfill," she said.

Bridget Compton, Adair County Fiscal Court Clerk and Solid Waste Coordinator, said she is hopeful that the next budget, starting July 1, 2021, may allow for the Recycling Center to reopen. The pandemic and loss of labor meant it had to be closed for the remainder of this budget year. Click on the following links to review Adair County's Solid Waste position last summer.
