Coetzee sets meet record on day one of MSC Championships By Brady Budke Kingsport, TN - The Lindsey Wilson men's swimming team sits in second place after day one of the Mid-South Conference Swim Championships at the Kingsport Aquatics Center in Kingsport, Tennessee. The Blue Raiders rounded up 176.5 total points, trailing behind Cumberlands (KY) who amassed 245.5 points to hold the top spot. Calvin Coetzee emerged as a top headline for Lindsey Wilson with his day one performance, as he set the new MSC Swim Championships meet record in the 500-yard freestyle. Coetzee began the event off to a strong start when he earned an A-cut and a first place finish in the prelims with a time of 4:37.39. In the finals race, Coetzee set the record with his time of 4:27.47, earning him first place, a First-Team All-Conference selection, and a national A-standard time. Coetzee surpasses the old meet record set by Matija Luka Rafaj, who set the top time of 4:34.18 in 2017 while competing for Lindenwood-Belleville (IL) at the MSC Swim Championships. Ricky Dungan notched an eighth place prelim finish in the 500-yard freestyle and a B-cut with a time 4:55.11, while securing eighth place in the finals with another B-standard time of 4:56.24. Michael Peck earned a B-cut in the race with his finals time of 4.54.24. Coetzee rounded up another First-Team All-Conference selection alongside James de Goede, Tyler King, and Ron Wolfart in the 800-yard freestyle relay, where the quartet accomplished the winning finals time of 6:57.08 and a Blue Raider A-Cut. The 200-yard medley relay consisting of William Thilwind, Bryce Rice, Coetzee, and Wolfart earned Second-Team All-Conference honors with a second place finals time of 1:35.26, which earned another national A-standard for Lindsey Wilson. In the 200-yard individual medley, Wolfart earned an appearance in the finals with his fourth place prelim time of 1:59.27, earning a national A-cut. Along with Wolfart, Reece Kincaid secured a spot in the finals after he swam a second place prelim time of 1:56.88, an A-cut time also. In the finals of the event, Wolfart secured second place and Second Team All-Conference honors with his A-cut finals time of 1:55.34. Kincaid finished right behind Wolfart in third place with his A-cut finals time of 1:56.82. Thilwind garnered a B-cut in the race with a prelim time of 2:01.59. The 50-yard freestyle saw King race his way through the prelims with a seventh place finish and a national A-standard time of 21.93. King would swim a finals time of 21.78 to take home a sixth place finish and another A-cut in the event. De Goede (22.15), Rice (22.53) and Jordan Schaffer (22.55) all notched B-cuts in the prelim race, as de Goede added an A-cut with his finals time of 21.84.
