LWC Basketball raises cancer awareness this week

By Chris Wells

Lindsey Wilson basketball returns to Biggers Sports Center for a pair of Mid-South Conference doubleheaders this week, but they are not normal doubleheaders.

Both teams will do their part in bringing awareness to fight against cancer.

The Lindsey Wilson men's basketball team will participate in its annual Coaches vs. Cancer Suits and Sneakers on Thursday in their game with Cumberland (TN) while the women's program will have its annual pink game on Saturday when the Blue Raiders host Life (GA).

"This is an incredibly important cause and I applaud our basketball coaches and teams for bringing awareness to this fight" Lindsey Wilson athletics director Willis Pooler said. "Cancer touches each and every one of us in some manner and it is important that we support those battling this dreadful disease."

According to the American Cancer Society website, Coaches vs. Cancer Suits and Sneakers was created to unite basketball coaches across the country for a common cause -- saving lives from cancer. This season, Coaches vs. Cancer is focusing on childhood cancer research while promoting prevention efforts targeting children.

Since 1993, the initiative has raised over $125 million for the American Cancer Society.

Lindsey Wilson hosts Cumberland at 8pmCT on Thursday, Jan. 30, at Biggers Sports Center. The game is the second of a doubleheader which begins at 6pmCT with the Lindsey Wilson and Cumberland women.

The Lindsey Wilson women will don their pink uniforms on Saturday in their annual Breast Cancer Awareness Game.

According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc. website, one in eight women in the United States will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. There are over 3.5 million breast cancer survivors in the U.S.

Lindsey Wilson women's basketball will give away a pink tee-shirt to the first 40 people with a valid Lindsey Wilson identification card to show up to Saturday's game.

The Blue Raiders host Life (Ga.) at 2pmCT in the first of two games on Saturday at Biggers Sports Center. The Lindsey Wilson and Life men's game follows at 4 p.m. CT.

A portion of the proceeds from Thursday and Saturday's gate will be donated to the American Cancer Society.
