LWC Football inches closer to championship appearance

After traveling to Kansas Wesleyan last Saturday and knocking off the Coyotes 35-24, the Blue Raiders football team sits just one game away from an NAIA National Championship appearance, as they will travel to Marian (IN) to face the Knights in a semifinal matchup at 12:05pmCT on Saturday at St. Vincent Field in Indianapolis, Indiana. This matchup for Lindsey Wilson marks the first time in program history the Blue Raiders have made a semifinal appearance.



On offense for the Blue Raiders (12-0), junior quarterback and Mid-South Conference Bluegrass Player of the Year selection Cameron Dukes comes in as the top offensive passing threat. In the semifinal victory over Kansas Wesleyan, Dukes went 16-of-27 passing for 192 yards and three passing touchdowns. Dukes has completed 230 passes for 3,219 yards and 35 passing touchdowns while throwing just seven interceptions this season.

Wide receivers Jay Gaudlock (MSC Bluegrass First Team), Joshua Lewis (MSC Bluegrass Second Team), and Terrill Cole Jr. serve as the powerful trio for the Lindsey Wilson passing attack, combining for 141 catches, 2,144 total receiving yards, and 24 total touchdowns so far this season. In the last outing against the Coyotes, the trio combined to haul in 15 of the teams 17 total completions led by Cole Jr. who pulled in seven receptions for 96 yards and two touchdowns. Gaudlock managed five receptions for 39 yards, while Lewis recorded three receptions for 58 yards and a touchdown.

The Blue Raider ground attack has been heavily influenced by running back and MSC Bluegrass First Team selection Jaylen Boyd and Dukes so far this season. Boyd eclipsed the 100-yard mark in the quarterfinal victory for the sixth time this season, rushing 24 times for 155 yards and a touchdown. Dukes carried the ball nine times for 47 yards and a touchdown. On the season, Boyd has carried the ball 148 times for 1,030 rushing yards and 11 rushing touchdowns, while Dukes has rushed 136 times for 311 yards and 11 touchdowns.

The Lindsey Wilson defense is allowing just 17.1 points per game which is the lowest amount so far in program history. Linebacker and MSC Bluegrass First Team selection Luke Bowman serves as a defensive workhorse for the Blue Raiders, as he leads the team in tackles for loss (16.5), sacks (5), solo tackles (55), assisted tackles (42), and total tackles (97). Bowman notched six solo tackles, five assisted tackles, and two tackles for loss for a team-high 11 total tackles in the quarterfinal victory. The Blue Raider secondary has accomplished 22 interceptions this season, led by defensive back James Todd who has tallied seven interceptions for 240 yards and two touchdowns.

Marian (11-0) had no problem in their quarterfinal matchup against Cumberlands (Ky.), defeating the Patriots by a final score of 30-0.

The Knights defense headlines their successful play so far this season as they are allowing just 7.5 points per game to their opponents, the lowest amount in the NAIA this season. Marian boasts the number one ranked pass defense in the NAIA, allowing just 116.5 passing yards per game. On the ground, the Knights rank third in the NAIA allowing just 72.2 rushing yards per game. Marian has also allowed the least amount of first downs to their opponents in the NAIA this season at 135.

The Knight defense is powered by linebacker and MSFA-Mideast Defensive Player of the Year selection Nickai Poyser, who has notched team highs in solo tackles (53), assisted tackles (43), total tackles (96), and tackles for loss (18). In the trenches, defensive lineman Mac Dutra leads the way with 9.5 sacks and has forced three fumbles so far this season. In the secondary, defensive back Ryley Pease has garnered a team high three interceptions for 31 yards.

On the offensive side of the ball for Marian, the rushing attack sees a heavy workload from running back and MSFA-Mideast Offensive Player of the Year selection Charles Salary, who has rushed for 1,460 yards and 15 touchdowns on 281 carries. Salary had an explosive outing against conference foe Concordia (Mich.) on October 19th, where he rushed the ball 46 times for 315 yards and a touchdown for an average of 6.7 yards per carry. Salary is averaging 129.5 rushing yards per game, which marks the third straight year the senior has averaged over 100 rushing yards per game. Tristen Tonte has also made his mark in the backfield, rushing the ball 96 times this year for 565 yards and 5 touchdowns.

Quarterback and All-MSFA Mideast First Team selection Ethan Darter serves as the main asset through the air, as he's completed 133 passes this season for 2,057 yards, 17 touchdowns, and four interceptions. In the quarterfinal victory over the Patriots, Darter was 12-of-26 passing for 174 yards and one touchdown.

All-MSFA First Team selection Johnny Williams serves as the top receiver for Marian, as he's caught 45 passes for 814 yards and seven touchdowns. Despite playing in just eight games this season, Williams has been able to add six 100-yard receiving games for an average of 101.8 receiving yards per game. Behind Williams, Greg Miller Jr. (MSFA-Mideast Second Team) and Jared Clark (MSFA-Mideast Honorable Mention) also play large roles for the Knight air attack, with Miller Jr. pulling in 26 receptions for 404 yards and three touchdowns this season, and Clark grabbing 22 receptions for 265 yards and two touchdowns this season.
