Adair School Board November 2019 meeting - REPORT

New Transportation and Maintenance Director, job opens for new Principal, and "harsh" news about CBD Oil showing positive on drug tests

By Linda Waggener

Dr. Pamela Stevens presented the Adair County High School Marching Band and director Tom Case for recognition and to lead the Pledge of Allegiance at the Thursday, November 21, 2019, Adair County School Board meeting. The band was honored for its outstanding 24th record-breaking win.

Director Case said, "We are very proud of our rich heritage and I'm thankful to be able to lead this band." He said he was grateful for the support of the School Board and said, "I think Dr. Stevens is hoarse tonight because she yelled so hard for us at state."

Superintendent Stephens was hoarse but she made it through her comments.

She announced that Transportation and Maintenance Director David Jones will be retiring at the end of this year and his replacement will be the present Adair County Elementary School Principal Steve Burton. He thanked the Board for the opportunity and said he knew you he had big shoes to fill. He said, "Mr. Jones ran the number one transportation department in the state - and that says it all."

With this change it is necessary to have a new Treasurer and that position will be filled by Carol Roy, Food Services Director, the Superintendent said.

The job of ACES Principal will now be posted for 15 days and the process of finding the new leader will begin.

The position of Sports Medicine Director is also being created in hopes he or she will be ready to go to work in 2020. TJ Health Columbia is partnering with the School District.

David Jones said after the meeting that he plans to continue building his year-round fishing guide business, Green River Lake Crappie Trips. On his website, he says, "...I have a desire to spend every minute I can on the lake catching and teaching others about Crappie fishing." On his home page he dedicates the site "to Presley Chelf and Sammy Blair" who took time to take him fishing. You can take a fishing trip with David and Tim Farmer on the video on his site.

Dr. Stevens said that every employee of the school district will be getting a letter about drug and alcohol testing and the danger posed by the popular new CBD oil which has been determined to show positive on drug tests. After having attended a law conference, the guidelines are clear for public schools.

She said, "While it sounds harsh, it is harsh, but if an employee of the School District tests positive, the employee goes home." She said even the Superintendent is included in the random drug and alcohol testing.

Dean of Students Robbie Harmon congratulated Adair County Elementary School students, staff and administrators as he presented the 2018-2019 Attendance award to ACES principal Steve Burton and assistant principal Summer Brown for having the best attendance for the sixth year in a row.

In the auditors report, Mike Jones of Mather and Company congratulated the School Board on having Finance Officer Renae Smith and her team for doing such a thorough job. He said there were "no significant findings and that is very good."

The Adair County School Board meets at 6pmCT, each third Thursday, at the Board Conference Room, lower level, 1204 Greensburg Street, Columbia, KY. The School Board phone number 270 384-2476.
