City of Columbia proclaims November 15 as Pam Scott Day By Linda Waggener The City of Columbia proclaimed November 15, 2019 as Pam Scott day. In the proclamation signed by Mayor Pamela Hoots, the honor is bestowed for her work with Lewis Transport which has assisted the growth of Columbia and for her commitment to the city for over 50 years. Lewis Transport, now a huge organization centered in Louisville, was started in Columbia in the 1930s by Alvin Lewis. At that time he delivered and sold kerosene and fuel oil to individuals and businesses. He purchased property on Reed Street and ran the Aetna Oil bulk plant which became the Ashland oil facility before it was moved to Russell Springs during the mid 70s. Lewis Transport was incorporated in July 1952 and became a contract petroleum charter carrier, then as the need arose it began securing authorities which was continued by Gus Clark who became general manager and later president. Under his guidance, Lewis Transport became a recognized name in the petroleum hauling world. Today the company has 48 state authority, and is considered a regional petroleum hauler with trucks based in Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, and Tennessee. Its headquarters remain in Columbia. There are approximately 40 employees in all locations, with 18 administrative personnel in the city of Columbia. There are over 100 trucks delivering throughout the Midwest. The event came with special memories for me, in addition to honoring Pam Scott's contributions. My Uncle Russell and Aunt Gin Marcum Hughes, who grew up in Metcalfe County, were also in that industry in Louisville and spoke often of doing business with the leaders of Lewis Transport.
