KY celebrates National Apprenticeship Week

By Kim Saylor Brannock

Frankfort, KY - In recognition of National Apprenticeship Week (NAW), Governor Bevin has issued a proclamation recognizing November 11-17 as apprenticeship week in Kentucky. Apprenticeship week brings together business, labor, education and government to raise awareness about the impact of apprenticeship on today's workforce.

In recognition of this nationwide celebration, the Education and Workforce Development Cabinet (EWDC) hosted its annual Registered Apprenticeship Summit: Proven and Profitable on Tuesday, November 12 to highlight how Kentucky has utilized apprenticeship to build a highly skilled workforce to meet the talent needs of employers across the Commonwealth. This year's summit featured panel discussions with industry, government and international experts who shared best practices for implementing the apprenticeship model, dispelling myths, and discussed why apprenticeship is a win-win for both employers and apprentices.

When asked about the importance of registered apprenticeships, EWDC Secretary Derrick Ramsey stated, "Apprenticeships are a great equalizer for those seeking alternative means of improving their quality of life through work-based learning. Both, employers and apprentices, are able to have their needs met in ways that are safe and sustainable, and that is worth celebrating."

Providing employers with a highly skilled, qualified workforce is essential for Kentucky's economic growth and ability to compete in a global economy. Kentucky continues to be a champion for registered apprenticeship, and has utilized apprenticeship to fill workforce pipelines with diverse, productive, highly skilled workers. Today, Kentucky has nearly 4,000 registered apprentices in the Commonwealth, and has allotted $1.5 million in federal funding to grow apprenticeship opportunities.
