Monday, October 14, 2019, marked a troubling point in Adair County recycling. At the first Fiscal Court meeting of October the discussion included the announcement that on this date the county is being forced to cut back recycling operations. The problem is in the market place and is under study.

The recycling center, instead of being open five days a week, will now only be open on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 7am to 3pmCT and no recycling pick ups will be done.

Residents and businesses may take their recycling to the center located at 62 Service Road off Hwy 55 North in Columbia for the time being, however, it was pointed out that the recycling center could become a dump site if solutions are not found quickly for small populations like ours.

Neighboring counties are being studied to find methods that may work for others and can be utilized here.

The project was started by former Gov. Steve Beshear with Congressman Hal Rogers in the SOAR initiative in eastern Kentucky. He expects work in Adair County will be completed this year and all of the state by this time next year.
