LWC Cycling finishes 8th at Collegiate Mtn Bike Nationals

By Christopher Coombs

Big Bear Lake, CA - The Lindsey Wilson cycling team posted an eight-place finish at the Collegiate Mountain Bike National Championship this past weekend as they competed against 20 other programs from across the country.

"I am extremely pleased with how we performed this weekend. We faced some challenges in the cross country and short track cross country races with mechanicals, and the course was extremely demanding but the team did their job and handled the adversity," Said head coach Josh Patton. "We have a lot of freshmen this year so seeing them perform on the national stage has allowed us to better prepare for next year."

Friday began with varsity cross country men's race as Phillip Christmas, Tyler Junkins, Amai Rawls, Grant Wilson, and Luis Rivera all competed in the event. The race consisted of three, eight-mile laps as they were tasked with climbing nearly 4,000 feet.

Rawls was the top LWC finisher in 37th place while Wilson secured 40th as both helped score points for team omnium. Christmas placed 44th, Junkins 54th, and Rivera pulled from the race.

In the varsity cross country women's race, Sumi Yuki was Lindsey Wilson's only competitor. Sumi would place 53rd on the day.

After cross country, dual slalom qualifiers took place as the Blue Raiders saw great placements in a record number of competitors in the event.

Saturday began with downhill seeding as Angelo Loskota claimed 10th, John Jilbert 28th, Mateo Marasas 31st, and Christopher White 43rd. In the women's field, Emily Harris cracked the top-10 with a ninth-place finish, Elida Beeman in 22nd, Korie Gilbert 30th, Noelle Vidak 33rd, and Cassidy Ellis 39th.

Saturday afternoon the short track cross country events kicked off with Christmas in 32nd, Junkins in 35th, and Amai Rawls in 40th as they all scored points for the team omnium. Rivera and Wilson also competed in the event as they finished in 55th and 58th, respectively.

Women's short track cross country had Harris in 39th and Yuki in 42nd.

To end Saturday's session was the dual slalom finals, the Blue Raiders best event of the weekend. Loskota made it to the small final placing fourth as Dustin Hammond made the final where he narrowly missed the national title finishing in second. Mateo Marasas finished in 16th, followed by Chris White in 30th and John Jilbert in 39th.

The women also saw impressive results as Beeman narrowly missed the final round, making it to the small final where she placed third, the Blue Raiders best women's finisher for the event. Ellis finished in 22nd, Vidak in 16th, Yuki in 14th, Gilbert in 12th and Emily Harris would go on to place in 7th.

The Blue Raiders took second in points for both men and women in dual slalom to garner points towards the team omnium standings.

"The highlight of the weekend was seeing three of our rider's medaled during the Dual Slalom. We train extremely hard for this event and take pride in being a dominant force in this at the national level," Patton said. "I am excited to see what this team is capable of over the next few years."

Sunday began with downhill finals with Loskota as the team's best finish in ninth place. Following Loskota was Jilbert in 29th, Marasas in 35th and White in 44th. The women's race saw Harris with a 23rd place finish, Gilbert in 24th, Beeman in 27th, Vidak in 34th and Ellis in 36th.

The final event of the weekend was team relay with Junkins, Yuki, Harris and Christmas all teaming up. The squad finished the event in 10th which cemented the Blue Raiders 8th overall in the team omnium standings.
