Columbia City Council meeting - October Report

Covered by Mitzi Bault

After passionate discussion on both sides of the Zoning issue of 511 Burkesville Street, Mayor Pamela Hoots was forced to break the City Council's three-three tie vote. That done, the City made what is a very rare disagreement with Planning & Zoning recommendations which allows for the cleared property to be used as a business.

Property owner Dustin Brockman and his family and business supporters drew an almost visible sigh of relief after making three meetings speaking out to defend his automotive business location staying within the City, moving from Jamestown Street to Burkesville Street.

The yes votes were made to keep the location residential and to defend against 'spot zoning'.

The no votes were made in defense of business, considering the 20 or so businesses surrounding that lot.

CPD Officer Drew Conn spoke in favor of the Zone change to business. He said he knew Brockman, his business and the proposed location, in the context of his work. He said that with its security cameras, this business would be an asset to safety of the neighborhood as a help to law enforcement.

The Mayor said the other zoning issue has been resolved but the Council went ahead and voted to accept the P&Z recommendation on it, keeping it residential.

In other matters, everyone is invited to this weekend's Downtown Days, the City's annual Renaissance Festival to hear Ricochet, this year's free concert featured artists and enjoy all the weekend's events.

The events are listed in a separate story and on the events pages of each day Friday and Saturday.

Council members present for the regular meeting included: Dr. Ronald Rogers, Sharon Payne, June Parson, Mark Harris, Linda Waggener and Craig Dean.

Regular meetings for the Columbia City Council are held the first Monday of each month at 6pmCT in City Hall, 116 Campbellsville St, Columbia, KY. Meetings are open to the public.
