Adair Heritage Association Elects Mike Watson President By Linda Waggener Mike Watson, local author and historian, is the newly elected president of the Adair Heritage Association, effective at the quarterly meeting September 16, 2019. He takes over for Ellen Zornes who will remain as a board member along with Lee Ann Jessie, vice president; Ted Caldwell, secretary; and Roger Meadows, treasurer; and board members Susan Loy and Richard Phelps. Business matters taken up after the election of officers was the volunteer work to be done this coming Saturday, September 21, 2019 on the Santa Fe Rosenwald school renovation. Volunteers are called for a day of work at the school. Work will be done under the direction of the Columbia Christian Church Band of Brothers. Mayor Pam Hoots reported on the upcoming Book Fair scheduled for October 12, 2019 from 10am-2pmCT at the Cranmer Dining Center on the campus of Lindsey Wilson College. About 50 authors have already made commitments to bring, sign and sell their books at the event. The Heritage Association will not hold a courthouse arts and crafts event during Christmas in Columbia this year now that offices have been located in the building. Most activities are being held in the Holloway Health and Wellness Center at LWC. There will be a parade at Christmas in Columbia this year hosted by the Chamber of Commerce with the theme of Lights Over Columbia. Courthouse lawn historical markers were discussed - a Greensburg Street marker - similar to the one facing Jamestown Street - is missing. Investigations have ruled out that the Greensburg Street historical marker might have been taken down for repairs, nor has it been moved to a different location within the county - it is permanently missing. Lee Ann Jessie said she is in discussion with Adair County Judge Executive Gale Cowan who will take the matter of replacement before the magistrates. Mike Watson provided the details on the missing marker - "County Named, 1801 [marker number 1139] with the following text: "For gen. John Adair, Governor of Kentucky 1820-1824. born, 1757, in South Carolina, came to Ky., 1788. Member of Kentucky Constitutional Convention, 1792. Served in Ky House of Representatives, 1793-95, 1800-03, 1817. US Senator, 1805-06, Congressman, 1831-33. At Battle of Thames, 1813. Commanded Kentucky troops in Battle of New Orleans, 1815. Died, 1840." Present at the meeting in addition to the leaders named above were: Rodney and Donna White, Sammy Hughes, Jane Grant, Linda Fitzpatrick, Mayor Pam hoots, and Linda Waggener. It was announced that Adair County Genealogy will meet at 5pmCT on November 4, 2019. This story was posted on 2019-09-18 09:11:07
