LWC Defense stymies Faulkner, wins 26-14 on Homecoming

By Chris Wells

The Lindsey Wilson defense limited Faulkner to 264 yards of total offense today in a 26-14 win over the Eagles during Homecoming at Blue Raider Stadium.

The Blue Raiders controlled the game from the outset, building a 26-0 lead to improve to 3-0 on the season with the win. Faulkner falls to 1-1 with the loss.

Cordarien Trice, Luke Bowman, and Malachi Rogan led the Blue Raiders with eight tackles each. Rogan added a pair of tackles for a loss, one sack and a forced fumble to help the Lindsey Wilson defense to surrender just one touchdown on the afternoon. Faulkner added a scoop-and-score on a blocked punt for its first points of the game in the third quarter.

While the defense was stout, the Blue Raider offense methodically accumulated 472 total yards -- including 209 on the ground. The Faulkner defense entered the game ranked second in the Mid-South Conference allowing just 77 rushing yards per game.

Jaylen Boyd led the Blue Raider rushing attack with 102 yards for his fourth career 100-yard rushing game and his second this season.

After a defensive battle to open the game, Lindsey Wilson finally dented the scoreboard with 3:49 left in the first quarter as Cameron Dukes connected with Jay Gaudlock on a 35-yard touchdown strike. Dukes finished the game with 17-of-33 for 263 passing yards and three touchdowns -- two passing and one rushing. Gaudlock caught five passes for a team-high 93 yards.

Lindsey Wilson played its best quarter of the day in the second frame sprinting out to a 23-0 lead at the break.

Dukes capped a 12-play, 83-yard drive with a one-yard plunge into the endzone for a 13-0 lead with 8:27 left in the half. The 12-play drive matches the longest of the season for the Blue Raiders.

After the Lindsey Wilson defense forced the first of two straight Faulkner three-and-outs, the Blue Raider offense extended the lead to 20-0. Dukes hit a streaking Tre Dickerson for 37 yards up the right sideline for his first touchdown catch of the season with 3:16 left.

The second three-and-out gave the Blue Raiders the ball back with 1:38 left and Lindsey Wilson cashed in with a Jared Daugherty 21-yard field goal as time expired.

The 23-0 lead marked the second straight game the Blue Raiders pitched a shutout in the opening half. Lindsey Wilson led Point (Ga.) last week 14-0 at intermission.

Daugherty extended the lead on its first drive of the second half with a 28-yard field goal for the 26-0 lead. Daugherty improves to 4-for-4 this season in field goals.

Faulkner scored its first points of the day on special teams in the waning seconds of the third quarter.

Aaron Reynolds blocked a Daugherty punt and Isaiah Scott scooped up the loose ball and scampered in for a touchdown with 28 seconds remaining in the quarter. The Eagles added their lone offensive touchdown of the game with 4:05 left in the game as Mason Blocker connected with Scott to trim the lead to 26-14.

Faulkner threatened to make things interesting recovering an on-side kick, but Mark Pruitt intercepted a deflected pass for the second takeaway of the day for the Blue Raiders to all but seal the win.

Boyd and company ran out the clock for the 26-14 win.

Terrill Cole Jr. finished the game with a team-high five catches for 37 yards while Scotty Krantz added a career-high four catches for 67 yards. J.T. Lyon joined Pruitt with an interception while ending with six tackles.

With the win, Lindsey Wilson improves to 9-1 all-time in Homecoming games, including winning seven straight.

Lindsey Wilson returns to action at Noon CT on Saturday, Sept. 21, as the Blue Raiders travel to Warner (Fla.) in Lake Wales, Florida.
