LWC Football opens season with win in the Battle of Hwy 55 By Christopher Coombs The Lindsey Wilson football team defeated Campbellsville University 40-24 in the Battle of Highway 55 on Thursday night at Blue Raider Stadium on the campus of Linsey Wilson College. The Blue Raiders (1-0, 1-0 MSC) finished with 412 yards of total offense - 269 through the air and 143 on the ground - to win their seventh straight season opener. LWC wins the Battle of Highway 55 fourth consecutive time and the fifth of their last seven against their MSC foe. Campbellsville (0-1, 0-1 MSC) finished the contest with 390 yards of total offense as three turnovers plagued their offensive efforts. Cameron Dukes finished the game 16-of-33 for 269 yards and two touchdowns as he also produced two scores with his legs. Jaylen Boyd rushed for 105-yards on 13 carries and one touchdown. Stevie Miller with a team-high 10 tackles - seven solo and three assisted - as Luke Bowman turned in nine tackles. Both Blue Raiders forced fumbles during the contest. Lindsey Wilson would strike first when James Todd recorded an interception on just the third play of the game. Leaping into the air, Todd returned the ball 32-yards all the way to the Campbellsville 13-yard line. Despite the starting field position the Blue Raiders would settle for a 29-yard field goal by Jared Dougherty. He is now the programs all-time leader in points with 241 after scoring ten points tonight. Campbellsville quickly responded with three points of their own on their next possession after Kendon Young got around the edge on the ensuing kickoff and was able to break into LWC territory at the 47-yard line. A long rush on the first play of the drive by Keanu Young put the Tigers at the Blue Raider six-yard line. A tough Blue Raider defensive stand would only afford CU a field goal, leveling the score at three. Terrill Cole Jr. would score the Blue Raiders first touchdown of the season with 4:13 left in the first quarter. Starting from the Tigers 38-yard line it would only take two Cameron Dukes completions to find the end zone. The first was a 13-yard pass to Jaylan Boyd before Dukes found a wide-open Cole Jr., over the middle for 25-yards and the score. Another turnover by Campbellsville afforded the Blue Raiders great starting field position early in the second quarter. Luke Bowman rattled the ball loose from the Tigers Young and was able to recover the ball at the 20-yard line. Three plays later the Blue Raiders would settle for a Dougherty field goal, this one from 47-yards and increased the LWC lead to 13-3. On the next Campbellsville possession, they would mount an 11 play 83-yard drive. After going for it on fourth down, the Blue Raider defense would slam the door closed at their own one-yard line. Stevie Miller was able to come up with the stop with just over four minutes left in the half. Coming out of the break, the Blue Raiders hit the ground running. After a 28-yard return by Hunter Watkins, Jaylen Boyd took a handoff and broke through a wide-open hole produced by his offensive line for 39-yards and into Campbellsville territory at the 29-yard line. Moving the ball to the CU eight-yard line the Blue Raiders would go for it on fourth and two. Dukes took the designed run to the left of his linemen and into the end zone untouched for the score. The seven-play, 68-yard drive increased the Blue Raider advantage to 20-3 with just under 12 minutes to play in the quarter. The Tigers would respond with a touchdown on their opening drive of the half after making a QB change to Chase Wilson. Campbellsville put together a nine-play 83-yard drive that was capped off by a Young 23-yard rushing score. The three-minute drive would only result in six points as the PA attempt was missed wide left. After the Blue Raiders turned the ball over on downs at the Tiger 28-yard line, Campbellsville would mount another drive. This one spanned 74-yards and just seven plays as Wilson took the QB sneak up the middle for one-yard and the score to end the drive. He would convert on the two-point attempt with a pass to Dakarai Highsmith. Lindsey Wilson would be leading by just three points at 20-17 with just over two minutes to play in the quarter but the Blue Raiders got the response they needed. On just the fourth play of the drive, Dukes would connect with Joshua Lewis on a 62-yard fly route down the Lindsey Wilson sideline for the score. Lewis finished the game with a game-high 93 yards. Campbellsville kept the ball rolling offensively as they would score on their third straight possession of the quarter. After a 57-yard return on the kickoff, CU would use just three plays to find the end zone from the LWC 40-yard line. Wilson's pass found a wide-open Zachary Cole over the middle for the score from 20-yards out. The score cut the LWC advantage back to three at 27-24. The Blue Raiders would punt away the ball during the first drive of the final quarter as Dukes boomed a 57-yard punt as the ball was downed at the CU three-yard line. The LWC defense would produce a three-and-out on Campbellsville's possession. On the ensuing punt, Lindsey Wilson's Jay Gaudlock took the ball from his own 25-yard line, 50-yards to the Campbellsville 25-yard line. Boyd would do most of the heavy lifting on the drive as he rushed for 23-yards before Dukes capped off the drive with a rushing touchdown, his second of the game. Dougherty's extra point was no good, giving LWC a 33-24 lead. Lindsey Wilson would get the ball back in good field position when Stevie Miller forced a fumble which was recovered by the Blue Raiders at the Tiger 47-yard line. The LWC offensive attack would string together a five-play scoring drive, 29-yards through the air and 18-yards on the ground, to give the Blue Raiders a 40-24 lead with 7:45 left. Dougherty's extra point here moved him to the top of the programs all-time scoring list. The score would be the last of the game as Campbellsville final drive stalled out at the LWC 17-yard line. Lindsey Wilson was then able to run the clock out from there to claim their sixth win in the Battle of Highway 55. This story was posted on 2019-08-30 07:08:45
