Columbia/Adair Chamber banquet draws over 200

by Linda Waggener

Retired Speaker of the of the Kentucky House of Representatives and Adair County native son, Jody Richards, was guest speaker at the annual Chamber of Commerce banquet Tuesday, May 14, 2019. Over 200 turned out for the business-focused event.

He reminded us of the good things of the past from his growing up years and his years of service in state government, and of the good things in our future. He said Columbia/Adair County has one of the finest qualities of life anywhere, outstanding public schools and a college with a strong, statewide reach, among many other assets.

He spoke of his mother Mary Richards who taught for nearly 40 years as both teacher and principal in the Adair County School system.

He said his dad was in construction and built the President's home at Lindsey Wilson and other buildings on campus.

He recalled that his father, Demaree Richards, owned a nice farm of bottom land on hwy 206, and after a rare flood in the area, the Adair County News headline read, "Heavy rains flood Demaree Richard's bottom."

He noted many changes in state government for the better, which, for one thing, allows for much greater citizen participation in state government. He said Kentucky has one of the best court systems in the nation.

KERA, the Kentucky Education Reform Act, is one of his most proud accomplishments - he said it improved all areas of education in the state.

He closed with an original poem that we hope to get a copy of and add to this report later. He and his wife Neva were greeted by many friends and kinfolks as the meeting came to a close.

Awards were passed out after the speaking was done. The winner in each category follows and photos will be linked to this story as they are processed.
