Thank You Coach Oliver and LWC Football Team Members

Coach Chris Oliver and his Lindsey Wilson College football team got a huge 'Thank You' from residents along Town Creek in Columbia for their date of service Wednesday, May 1, 2019.

For two weeks they took requests and then selected the projects around town they felt they could accomplish by dividing the team into smaller teams and getting down to work.

They collected bags and bags of plastic and other trash in just a few blocks of one of the projects, Town Creek, starting at the corner of Montgomery and Hurt streets and going to Jamestown Street.

The plastic items pulled out of the water included a full size banner from the former nail salon on Jamestown hill. The miscellaneous garbage items included a small child’s scooter, complete with an attached tiny plastic purse, that someone has probably missed.

Town Creek flows year-round, fed by natural springs, and catches garbage in times of high water and re-distributes it when it gets into the valley that ends at Lynn’s Service Center where it goes under Jamestown Street and heads on toward Russell Creek.

This event is one of two dates each year where students give their time to serve on local projects to help make this a better place. The other is a September event called Malvina Farkle Day. Clicking that link takes you to a story about last year's day.

This much plastic and trash was collected in just about a city block measure of the Town Creek in Columbia Wednesday. Coach Chris Oliver and his Lindsey Wilson College football team got a huge 'Thank You' from residents along Town Creek for their day of service May 1, 2019. I forgot to ask if they saw any groundhogs they might dispatch as they worked along the path of the creek. - LW

The plastic items pulled out of the water by the LWC Football Team included this full size banner from the former nail salon in the shopping center on Jamestown hill. Things that are tossed out or left behind are caught in times of wind and high water and the little creek re-distributes them when it gets into the valley that winds to Lynn’s Service Center where it goes under Jamestown Street and heads on toward Russell Creek.

On the Lindsey Wilson College Football Team day of service in Columbia, one of the miscellaneous items pulled out of Town Creek included a pink small child’s scooter, complete with an attached tiny plastic purse, that some little girl has probably missed. It and many other items had gotten stuck when high waters took them as far as possible along Town Creek before flowing on.

The Cardinal and many other birds that hunt along the Town Creek in Columbia observed the Lindsey Wilson Football Team Members hard at work, clearing debris blocking the water. Town Creek flows year-round, fed by natural springs, and catches garbage in times of high water and re-distributes it when it gets into the valley. It was only one of the projects the volunteers on Coach Oliver's Team worked on Wednesday, May 1, 2019. This event is one of two dates each year where students give their time to serve on local projects to help make this a better place. The other is a September event called Malvina Farkle Day.
