Adair County School Board April Report

The Adair County Board of Education met Tuesday, April 23, 2019. It meets regularly on the third Thursday but the April meeting was held the following Tuesday due to a scheduling conflict.

In less than 30 days another school year will come to a close and work will then focus on the 2019-2020 academic year. Commencement will be held Friday, May 24, 2019 at 7pmCT. Awards night is the night before on May 23.



In her Superintendent's Report, Dr. Pamela Stephens said, "Last month we had a Veteran we awarded a diploma for who was unable to finish high school due to service. We have another one that we are going to award - Kenneth N. Ballou. He is unable to attend due to illness so it will be mailed to him. Please remember him in thoughts and prayers as he is in ill health."

She also reported that of over a thousand applicants, Adair County High School is honored that the Governors Scholars program accepted three students - Madeline Harmon, Walter Baker and Ty Cheatham. She also acknowledged the counselors for their tremendous support and encouragement of students to go through the application process.

Agenda items were approved in regular business matters, including Minutes of the last meeting, Treasurer's Report, Payment of Bills, Out-of-State Trip by Adair County High School Academic Team to Massachusetts, Approval to submit a waiver to KDE for shortened school day for student, Senior Portrait Bids For The 2019-2020 School Year, Approval For Adair County Board of Education School Food Service Department to Participate in the Summer Feeding Program, Approval of Audit Contract for 2018-2019 School Year, Activity Budgets for 2019-2020 School Year, Approval to accept the FY 2019 2nd KETS offer of Assistance in the amount of $16,681.00 and to Escrow for up to Three Years. Adair County Public Schools are led by:

School Board Members - Terry Harvey (Division 1), Daniel Adams (Division 2), Lisa Burton (Division 3), Jonathan Gaskins (Division 4), and Troy Grider (Division 5).

Adair Board of Education board members tour new bus

The new school bus, one of two 2020 model Bluebirds, is shown behind School Board Members after the April 23, 2019 Adair County Board of Education meeting. The bus pictured is Number 51 which will be going to Portland. Bus number 52 will be going to Millerfield. Older busses that will be taken out of everyday use will be kept for backup. Roof questions answered at April School Board meeting

David Jones, Transportation and Maintenance Director, points to a slide showing the high school roof areas that he negotiated upgrades on with no cost to the school system. He showed pictures at the April 23, 2019 Adair County Board of Education meeting that explained why he believed, even though the installers said there'd be no problem, that certain areas of the two-year-old roof needed to be upgraded to prevent problems and to keep the life of the warranty protected. HOSA group gets travel and funds approval from School Board

Jennifer Carter, ACHS instructor of health science and future health professionals, is pictured here with three of her four HOSA Members, the international organization in high schools for students who want to gain experience toward careers in health care. Pictured at the April 23, 2019 Adair County Board of Education meeting from left are: Ty Cheatham, Carter, Elizabeth Cook and Natalie Taylor. Absent at photo time was the fourth member, Jaiden Taylor, who had a previous school activity. HOSA student members develop leadership skills, build self-confidence and strengthen their academic and technical skills. Their requests for approval of out-of-state trip and transportation cost to Orlando, Florida were granted. The group is doing additional fundraising to help with other expenses as well.
