Blue Raiders sweep doubleheader against WVU Tech

The No. 6-ranked Lindsey Wilson softball team took two games against WVU Tech on Tuesday afternoon at Marilyn D. Sparks Park to wrap up their home portion of the 2019 regular season.

The Blue Raiders (36-2) shutout the Golden Bears (17-23) 8-0 in game one and captured game two by a final score of 9-1 as they ended both games via run rule. Lindsey Wilson out hit WVU Tech 17-7 for the afternoon.

Taylor Slade (9-0) got the start in the circle in game one pitching a complete game shutout, allowing just five hits and striking out 10. Kaylee Covey (1-0) picked up the win in game two after she went the full five innings, striking out four and allowing just two hits.

The Blue Raiders are back in action on Wednesday when they hit the road to take on Cumberland (TN) at 1pmCT.


Game One (6 Innings): Lindsey Wilson 8, WVU Tech 0

The Blue Raiders would score two runs in the second inning after a scoreless first. Samantha Luckett would bunt home Kalli Harris for the first run of the game as she would also reach base safely on the play. With the bases loaded later in the inning, Callum Pilgrim would walk to drive home Breanna Clark for the innings final run.

Lindsey Wilson would then score runs in the fourth, fifth, and sixth inning to close out the game.

Zakiya Sizemore would reach base on a Golden Bear error to lead off the fourth as Luckett would then hit her eighth home run of the season during the next at-bat.

Lindsey Wilson would score three more runs in the fifth inning, doing so with two outs. With runners on second and third Luckett singled to score Jaydee Boursaw. Boursaw reached on a leadoff double to begin the inning.

With the bases loaded, Pilgrim would single to score Harris and Luckett, giving LWC a 7-0 lead.

Cassie Matlock led off what would be the final inning with a bunt as she beat out the throw to first. She would then steal second to advance into scoring position before a Boursaw groundout allowed her to reach third. Harris would single to shallow right field, scoring Matlock and ending the game via run rule.

Game Two (5 Innings): Lindsey Wilson 9, WVU Tech 1

After a scoreless first inning, the Blue Raiders were able to push three runs across home plate in the second.

Harris singled to lead off the inning as Sizemore was then walked before a wild pitch allowed both to advance one base. Lauren Lett then grounded out but Harris scored on the play for the games first run.

Desiree Chang managed to load the bases when she was walked before a Pilgrim sac fly scored Sizemore. Kaluau would then be hit by a pitch to once again load the bases. Matlock would drive in the final run of the inning on a single past the shortstop.

Lindsey Wilson would add another run in the third inning, doing so on no hits. Two walks and a hit by a pitch to open the inning loaded the bases for LWC before a Chang groundout pushed home Harris, increasing the LWC lead to 4-0.

The Blue Raiders would again load the bases in the fourth inning. With one out, Sizemore would single to left scoring pinch-runner Amber Hancock and Matlock. A ground out and a pop out would end the inning.

WVU Tech scored their only run of the day in the fifth inning on a solo home run off the bat of Maddie Bowles.

With the bases once again loaded in the fifth inning, LWC was able to put the game away. A wild pitch scored Chang before Harris recorded a sacrifice fly that scored Hancock.

Boursaw would then reach base on a walk before stealing a second when WVU Tech's pitcher turned her back. Attempting the get Boursaw out on the play, The Golden Bears shortstop was unable to come up with the pickoff attempt and Matlock was able to score from her position at third. The run was all LWC would need as they won on a run-rule, 9-1.
