LWC Softball cruises in sweep of Ohio Christian

The No. 6-ranked Lindsey Wilson softball (31-1) team swept a pair of out of conference games against Ohio Christian (14-24) on Wednesday afternoon at Marilyn D. Sparks Park.

Blue Raiders took game one 11-0 in five innings, after outhitting the Trailblazers 14-3. Lindsey Wilson carried their offensive prowess into game two to defeat Ohio Christian 13-0, connecting for 19 hits compared to OCU's one.

Lindsey Wilson returns to conference play this weekend as they take on Mid-South Conference opponent Shawnee State (Ohio) on Friday and Saturday from Marilyn D. Sparks Park, Lindsey Wilson Sports Complex, 928 Russell Road, Columbia, KY.


Game one (Five Innings): Lindsey Wilson 11, Ohio Christian 0

Callum Pilgrim led off the game with a triple to left-center field and was later able to score when Zikiya Sizemore reached second base on an Ohio Christian error by the right fielder on a misplayed fly ball. Lindsey Wilson was able to push another run across the plate when Kalli Harris hit a sacrifice fly to score Sizemore.

The Blue Raiders offense would surge in the second inning as they managed a six-run inning. Breanna Clark led off the inning with a solo home run. Samantha Luckett would then double to left field. With two outs in the inning, Pilgrim would put runners on the corners with a single to left, and advance into scoring position with a stolen base.

Sizemore then stepped into the batter's box and produce a two-RBI single, increasing the LWC advantage to 5-0. Jaydee Boursaw then tacked on two more runs for the Blue Raiders with a home run over the centerfield fence. Harris then doubled and was driven in for the final run of the inning on a Cassie Matlock double during the next at-bat.

Lindsey Wilson would add another run in the home half of the third inning when Luckett was able to score on a Brenna Wethington single. Wethington came on to pinch hit for Pilgrim as Luckett reached base on a single earlier in the inning before advancing to third on a stolen base and then a wild pitch.

The Blue Raiders would score two more runs in the fourth inning to increase their lead to 11-0. Brooklyn Benefield, Abby Whelan, Clark, and Amber Hancock all recorded hits in the inning.

Taylor Slade pitched four scoreless innings as she recorded seven strikeouts against 13 batters all while allowing just two hits. Kaylee Covey pitched the final inning, striking out two batters to close out the game after five innings.

Pilgrim and Luckett both went 2-for-2 at the plate as Clark went 2-for-3 during the game. Seven other Blue Raiders produced hits for the contest.

Game two: Lindsey Wilson 13, Ohio Christian 0

The Blue Raiders carried their momentum into game two, scoring six runs in the first inning. With one out in the inning, Lindsey Wilson notched four consecutive singles before another out would pass. With two outs and two on base, Hancock knocked a three-run homer over the left field side moving the Blue Raider lead to six. Both Desiree Chang and Pilgrim managed to connect for singles before the close of the inning.

During the second, Boursaw led off with a solo home run over centerfield, adding to the lead. Lindsey Wilson tallied six hits during the inning while pushing in another four runs to make the score 11-0 heading into the third.

The Blue Raiders tagged on two more runs and five hits in the third to move the score to 13-0 before a scoreless fourth and top-half inning in the fifth.

Whelan picked up the win from the circle, pitching for 4.0 innings before Clark would close out the game pitching for an inning.

Whitney Fielder opened the game for the Trailblazers, throwing for an inning with Rachel Kennedy and Tayler Clark both making appearances as well.
