Marion Co. awarded $413,606 in TAP funds

By Jordan Smith

Frankfort, KY - Governor Matt Bevin and the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) announce $833,606 in Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) funds have been awarded to two Department of Highways District 4 counties - Marion and Hardin - to improve infrastructure for non-drivers in the community.

The award will fund the following projects:

  • Marion County, City of Bradfordsville: $413,606 - This project will improve drainage along KY 49 and KY 337 and construct a new sidewalk on both sides of Hwy 337 from 8th Street west to 6th Street. These projects will address flooding issues in the area and provide a safe pedestrian walkway.

  • Hardin County, City of Radcliff: $420,000 - This project constructs the Radcliff Happy Valley Walking Trail Tunnel that connects 8,170 feet of walking trails on the west side of US 31W to 6,091 feet of walking trails on the east side of US 31W. This network of trails cover one-quarter of the city and provides pedestrian access to several parks, retail stores, restaurants, convenience stores within the low-income residential area.

"We are grateful for this significant federal TAP investment to benefit Marion and Hardin counties," said Gov. Bevin. "Funds from this program enable local communities to implement important transportation projects that increase connectivity for diverse populations, such as non-driving and disabled Kentuckians."

"These funds support many Cabinet priorities such as improved safety, increased access and more efficient modes of transportation," said KYTC Secretary Greg Thomas. "We're pleased this community will be able to make needed improvements to enhance the quality of life for Kentuckians."

TAP is a federally funded reimbursement program administered through the Office of Local Programs in the KYTC's Department of Rural and Municipal Aid. Funding assists communities in funding transportation improvements, such as safe bicycle and pedestrian pathways and/or facilities, safe routes to schools, scenic routes and overlooks and other investments. Projects may be a mix of elements and accessible to the general public or targeted to a broad segment of the general public. This year, 14 projects were awarded funding statewide.

Funding for TAP is authorized as a dedicated portion of the Surface Transportation Block Grant (STBG) funding program under the Fixing America's Surface Transportation (FAST) Act, which authorizes federal transportation funding from Fiscal Year 2016-2020.
