Bill Beard remembered on the Public Square in Columbia By Mitzi Bault I found a picture of one of Adair County's icons who was admired and loved by my family and so many around here. As reported in an newspaper clipping by my Uncle Ed, Bill Beard was always trying to pull a trick. Most kids were kind of scared of him. We were around him some coming to see my Daddy, Peanut McKinley. The only time Bill ever scared me was when I was trying to tell him something -- he was a great big tall man -- and he just picked me up! He said it hurt his back bending over to talk to me. Once I was in town with some of my friends. We were going to cross Burkesville Street on the square and Bill was standing in front of the old Firestone building. Some of the girls were afraid of crossing the street because Bill was just standing there waving to people. I told them to come on. Slowly they followed me. We crossed the street and I just walked up to him and said, "Hi Bill." He looks down at me and asked, "Does your Daddy know you're walking the street?" I said, "Yes." Bill replied that he would be keeping a eye on me because he may have to take me to my Daddy. This story was posted on 2019-03-11 12:40:42
