LWC Men's Basketball over Pikeville 88-78 on Saturday

The Lindsey Wilson men's basketball team defeated Pikeville (Ky.) 88-78 on Saturday afternoon in Mid-South Conference action at Biggers Sports Center.

The Blue Raiders are back in action on Thursday when they take on Cumberlands (KY) at 8pmCT at Biggers Sports Center, 360 Spickard Drive, Columbia, KY.


The Blue Raiders shot an impressive 58.3 percent from the field after connecting on 28-of-48 attempts from the field as they added 11-of-23 attempts from deep. Pikeville controlled the glass, grabbing 35 rebounds to Lindsey Wilsons 26 for the game.

Five different Blue Raiders scored double-digit points as Shakaris Laney led the way with 19 and JR Adams added 17 points. Payton Cundiff finished with 15 points as Matthew Eldridge had 14 and Kel Stotts tallied 10. Adams added a team-high seven boards.

Lindsey Wilson and Pikeville traded baskets to a 7-7 tie early in the action before Pikeville took a 21-12 advantage in the contest with 12:48 on the clock. The Blue Raiders then mounted a comeback outscoring the Bears 14-3, holding Pikeville without a made basket over the next four minutes of play, to take a 26-24 lead with 8:30 to play. The Bears only points came via the charity stripe over the scoring spurt by LWC.

The Blue Raiders would take their largest lead of the half at five points, with just over five minutes to play in the but Pikeville trimmed that lead to just one when they went 4-of-4 from the foul line on their next two possessions, as LWC led 33-32 with 4:34 left in the half.

After a few empty possessions by both teams, Eldridge when to the line with just less than two minute to play and connected on both attempts to push the LWC lead to three.

Pikeville broke a scoreless drought by both teams, a combined 0-of-7 from the field over 3:44 minutes of the contest, to again cut the LWC lead back to one with 55 seconds to play.

Kel Stotts would drive hard to the basket, picking up an and-one during the final minute of the half as the Blue Raiders would take a 38-36 advantage into halftime.

Lindsey Wilson shot an impressive 52.2 percent from the field while limiting the Bears to a 37.9 shooting percentage but Pikeville was able to connect on 12-of-13 attempts from the charity stripe to keep the game close after the first 20 minutes of action. Pikeville controlled the glass, out rebounding LWC 21 to 11.

The Blue Raiders would take a 13 point lead after scoring four points from the foul line when Pikeville was called for two technical fouls early in the second half. Lindsey Wilson opened the first 2:48 of play on a 13-2 run as Adams and Eldridge both tallied six points for LWC, bringing the Blue Raiders would lead 51-38.

Lindsey Wilson and Pikeville traded points to a 63-52 LWC advantage with 11:31 left in regulation before a 5-0 Lindsey Wilson run gave the Blue Raiders their largest lead of the game at 68-52 with just over 10 minutes to play.

Pikeville would respond, outscoring Lindsey Wilson 9-0 over the next 1:16, trimming the LWC lead to 70-63. Laney would break the Blue Raiders drought on their next possession that spurred on a 4-0 Lindsey Wilson run, extending their lead to 74-63 with just over six minute to play.

The Blue Raiders would maintain an 11 or nine point lead over the next three minutes as the squads traded baskets to an 82-71 LWC lead. Pikeville managed a 5-0 run trimming the LWC lead to just six points with 2:18 to play, the closest the game had been sense early in the second half.

Adams would score on a toughly contested layup and later went to the line with 54.1 seconds to play, pushing the LWC lead to ten at 86-76.

After Pikeville missed on their next possession, the Bears quickly fouled Eldridge who couldn't connect on his two free-throw attempts. Pikeville quickly countered scoring two points on the other end before fouling Adams was able to put the game away at the charity stripe.

Jovantae Carleton scored a game-high 21 points as Luke Layhew recorded a double-double after finishing with 16 points and 10 rebounds for Pikeville.
