LWC Women's Basketball falls to Shawnee State 79-77

The Lindsey Wilson women's basketball team fell to Shawnee State (Ohio) in a game that came down to the final possession's by a final score of 79-77 on Thursday night at Biggers Sports Center in Mid-South Conference action.

The Blue Raiders will be back in action on Saturday when they take on Pikeville (KY) at Biggers Sports Center, 360 Spickard Drive, Columbia, KY, starting at 2pmCT.


For the second straight game Reagan Turner posted a career-best point total, this time recording 29 points on 9-of-17 shooting as she added four assists and two steals on the night. J'Nayah Hall added 20 points, one shy of her career-high as Jynea Harris was the only other Blue Raider in double figures with 10 points. Gerda Paulauskaite finished the game with a career-high 16 rebounds.

The Blue Raiders (11-6, 2-2 MSC) controlled the glass during the contest, outrebounding Shawnee State (17-3, 4-0 MSC) 47-38 including 25-14 on the offensive glass. LWC shot 36.6 percent from the field and connected on 21-of-25 free throw attempts but couldn't overcome the Bears 46.0 shooting percentage for the night.

Lindsey Wilson lost the opening jump but Turner quickly stole a Bears pass at the top of the key, scoring at the other end for the game's first points. The Blue Raiders would score on their first three possessions of the game but Shawnee State was able to keep pace as the two squads were all square at six early in the action.

The Blue Raiders would regain the lead and hold on to it until the 4:11 mark of the quarter when Shawnee State connected on a deep three to take their first lead of the game at 14-13. Turner would regain the lead via the foul line a minute later as LWC would take a 19-18 advantage after the first 10 minutes of action.

Lindsey Wilson dominated the offensive glass in the quarter, grabbing nine rebounds that led to quality second chance points from the paint.

Shawnee State and the Blue Raiders found themselves once again tied in the game, this time at 25-25 with 6:48 on the clock. Three straight empty possession by Lindsey Wilson and Shawnee State finding a groove on both ends of the court gave the Bears a 31-25 lead at the media timeout.

The Bears managed to push their lead to as many as nine - the largest lead of the half - with just over two minutes to play but the Blue Raiders battled back to trail by just five at 39-34 at the break.

Lindsey Wilson finished the half shooting 36.6 percent from the field but the Bears managed an impressive 57.1 shooting percentage as they connected on 4-of-5 three point attempts. LWC controlled the glass in the half, grabbing 22 boards - 15 offensive rebounds - while limiting Shawnee State to 16 total rebounds.

The Blue Raiders scored their first four points of the second half via the charity stripe to trail by three at 41-38 but Shawnee State would outscore LWC 12-5 from there to take a 10 point lead with 5:35 to play in the third quarter.

Lindsey Wilson managed to cut the Bears lead to nine twice over the next 2:44 of action and trim the lead to five with just under two minutes to play but Shawnee State would ultimately lead 60-53 with ten minutes to play.

The Blue Raiders managed to trail by just two points after going a perfect 6-of-6 from the charity stripe to start the fourth quarter and Hall added a made basket to trail 63-61 with 7:54 left in regulation.

Shawnee State responded, outscoring LWC 8-4 over the next three minutes but a steal by Hall with 4:24 on the clock and a made Turner three moments later cut the Bears lead to three. Turner would score the Blue Raiders next four points to position the Blue Raiders just one point behind the bears at 75-74.

On the next LWC possession Heidi Huffman knocked down a three with 2:03 left in regulation to give the Blue Raiders their first lead of the game since the early in the second quarter at 77-75.

After two empty possessions by both team, Shawnee State managed to knockdown a three of their own to regain the lead at 78-77.

With eight seconds left on the clock, the Blue Raiders inbounded from the baseline but couldn't convert on the layup, forcing a foul with 0.8 seconds on the clock as Shawnee State would win 79-77.

Bailey Cummins led Shawnee State with 19 points as three other Bears finished with double-digit points.
