By Christopher Coombs

The Lindsey Wilson men's basketball team defeated Harris Stowe (Mo.) 58-57 after Kel Stotts cashed in on a clutch corner three with 3.2 seconds left in the game. The Blue Raiders would trail by nine points at 49-40 with nine minute left in the game but would go on to outscore the Hornets 18-8 to pick up their eighth win of the season.

Shakaris Laney scored a game-high 16 points for Lindsey Wilson (8-6) as Mathew Eldridge tallied 12 points and Jalon Perry scored 11 in their first game as Blue Raiders. Eldridge picked up a double-double as he also managed to grab a game-high 13 boards.

The Blue Raiders managed to pick up the win despite shooting just 37.7 percent from the field. Harris Stowe (7-3) shot 41.8 percent from the floor as LWC dominated the glass grabbing 44 rebounds to the Hornets 33, including an 18-8 advantage for offensive rebounds.

Through the first nine minutes of action Lindsey Wilson and Harris Stowe traded baskets to an 11-11 tie. From there the Hornets managed to put together a 10-2 run to give themselves the largest lead of the half at 21-13 with 8:11 on the clock.

The Blue Raiders would trim the Hornet lead just three with 2:20 on the clock when a strong defensive effort led to a 9-4 run. Eldridge would score on a turnaround jump shot with just under one minute to play, cutting the Harris Stowe lead to one.

Nate Rigmaiden connected from deep as time expired in the first half for the Hornets to give them a 28-24 advantage at the break.

Lindsey Wilson controlled the glass in the half as they grabbed 22 rebounds to the Hornets 15 including a 9-1 advantage in offensive rebounds but couldn't turn the opportunities into consistent points. Harris Stowe shot 46.2 percent from the field while the Blue Raiders managed to connect on just 32.4 percent of their attempts from the field.

The Blue Raiders would cut the Harris Stowe lead to just one twice over the half's first four minutes of action before Laney connected from beyond the arc to give LWC a 35-34 advantage. The lead was Lindsey Wilson's first since the 12 minute mark of the first half when they led 13-11.

The lead was short lived for LWC as Harris Stowe's Duane Clark converted on a three point play on their next possession that spurred the Hornets on a 6-0 run. Perry scored five straight points for the Blue Raiders on back-to-back possessions to tie the game a 40-40 with just under 11 minutes to play.

An 11-4 spurt over the next five minutes by the Hornets gave Harris Stowe a seven point advantage but Lindsey Wilson would again claw their way back to tie the game at 51 after Laney connected on a three for the Blue Raiders with 4:23 to play.

After a few empty possession by both squads late in the game, Harris Stowe would take a 56-53 advantage in the game with 47 seconds to play. Laney trapped the Hornets Bear Clarkson on the sideline before picking up a steal and an easy bucket at the other end with 17 seconds to play to trail by two at 56-55.

Christian Wimbley connected on the first of two free throws with 16 seconds to play for Harris Stowe but Stotts hit a clutch corner three with 3.2 seconds on the clock off a perfect pass from Eldridge.

Upon inbounding the ball a Harris Stowe player stepped on the sideline as the Blue Raiders were then able to inbound the ball with less than one second on the clock to put the game away.

The Blue Raiders are back in action on Saturday when they take on Cumberland (Tenn.) in their Mid-South Conference season opener at the Dallas Floyd Recreation Center in Lebanon, Tennessee.
