Basketball: Lady Indians win thriller in Green Co.

By Trey Stephens, Staff Writer

On Saturday, January 3, 2025, the Adair County Lady Indians defeated the Green County Dragons 64-61 on the road in double overtime. The game was a thriller. We were tied 16-16 by the end of the first quarter. The Lady Indians ripped off an 11-0 run to open the second quarter, and they lead by nine at the half. However, Green County fought back and cut the Adair County advantage to just three by the end of the third quarter.

Regulation play ended with the game all tied at 48. The first overtime period led to another deadlock, this time 58-58. Tough defense in the final period put the Lady Indians over the top for a 64-61 win.

Sophomore Reese Bardin lead the scoring with 17, followed by senior Kinzlee Akin with 14. Freshman Ella Brown lead the team off the backboard with eight rebounds and 8th grader Ila Loy pulled down seven. The team shot the ball 39% from the floor and 40% from three point range. They shot 60% from the free throw line.

This win for Adair County snaps a streak of 15 straight wins for Green County over Adair County stretching all the way back to 2014. This was also the first recorded double overtime game for the program since 2019, when the team fell 41-40 to Cumberland County in double OT.

The Lady Indians will look to carry the momentum from this win as they prepare for a road trip to take on the Glasgow Lady Scotties (3-9) at 6pmCT on Tuesday, January 8, 2025.

UofL McConnell Scholars visit Columbia

Three students from the University of Louisville's McConnell Center assembled at City Hall in Columbia on Monday, January 5, 2026. Columbia's own Trey Stephens was joined by Elizabethtown's Grant Avis and Louisville's Hannah Cease.

This was the first visit to Columbia for Cease and Avis, who met with Mayor Pamela Hoots and Chief Evan Burton to learn more about the operation of local government and Columbia specifically. After meeting with local leaders they embarked on a tour of Columbia to learn more about the blossoming community and its history.

The McConnell Center is a non-partisan educational institution that seeks to identify, recruit and nurture Kentucky's next generation of great leaders. Core principles of the center are leadership, scholarship, and service.

McConnell Scholars is a four year program at the University of Louisville, where students get enhanced academic experiences outside of the traditional classroom under the direction of Gary L. Gregg, PhD. Programming focuses on the foundations of leadership and political and social thought in America. General opportunities include participating in Socratic-style seminars with UofL faculty and nationally-recognized experts, authors, and leaders on a variety of topics related to American social and political thought.

Basketball: Indians head to Russell Co. after Barren win

By Trey Stephens, Staff Writer

On Saturday, January 3, 2025, the Adair County Indians defeated the Barren County Trojans 89-74 at home. Tylin George dominated the night, putting up a 30 point triple-double with 10 rebounds and 10 assists.

Dawson Gilbert also had a solid night with 24 points. Landon Blakey posted 17 points and a team-leading 12 rebounds for a double-double. John Shehan also scored in double figures for the Tribe with 11. The team shot 58% from the floor and 40% from three point range.

The Indians now set their sights on the Russell County Lakers (7-6) in the first round of the 2A Sectional. The Lakers come off a 49-59 loss to Monroe County on the road on Friday. They are led in scoring by seniors Maddox Shearer and Dylan Stanelle with 19.8 and 18.2 points per game respectively. Cumberland County is the lone mutual opponent for the two teams. Both teams scored wins over the Panthers, Russell County 84-75 on the road, and the Indians 71-66 at home.

The Tribe will hope to notch their fifth straight win tonight, looking for another attempt at a 2A sectional title, which has in recent times been rather elusive for the Indians. Make the trip and come support the team. Tip off is scheduled for 7pmCT tonight, Monday, January 5, 2025, at Russell County High School, 2166 US-127, Russell Springs, KY.

Tommy Druen: Change is hard

Previous Column: Collective gullibility

By Tommy Druen

A few years ago, I came across a historical photograph that caught my attention. It showed a massive traffic jam in Sweden in 1967. Traffic jams, of course, are nothing remarkable. We've all endured them--whether during rush hour in a city or stuck behind a slow-moving tractor on a one-lane country road. But this one was different. The photograph captured a moment of complete and utter chaos, with no obvious cause.

Having read the caption of the photo, I knew the basic reason for the congestion, but I hadn't given it much thought until Dr. Patrick DeVane, my pastor, referenced it in a recent sermon. He told the story of September 3, 1967--the day Sweden experienced Hoegertrafikomlaeggningen, better known to us non-Swedish speakers as the day the country switched from driving on the left-hand side of the road to the right.

This was not a decision the Swedes made lightly. The issue was hotly debated for eight years before a final determination was reached. The reason was that all their neighboring countries drove on the right and the vast majority of the vehicles owned by Swedes were designed to be driven on the right. The decision was made with the intent to reduce accidents. Even then though, the change was not immediate. The switch was scheduled to occur four years later, allowing ample time for a comprehensive public information campaign.

Columbia Cemetery seeks bids for 2026 mowing season

From Barry Loy

The Columbia Cemetery is seeking bids for the 2026 mowing season. The cemetery is located on Campbellsville Street and is approximately 8 acres. The bidder is considered an independent contractor, providing equipment, materials, and all pertinent insurance.

The typical mowing schedule is:
  • March: Once
  • April: Three times
  • May: Three times
  • June: Two times
  • July: Two times
  • August: Two times
  • September: Two times
  • October: Two times
  • November: Once plus final cleanup
The rain and temperatures may dictate some adjustments. The job includes trimming around all stones, and blowing grass clippings off the stones. This needs to be coordinated with the actual mowing, so that all three tasks are completed closely enough in time to maintain an overall neat appearance.

Bids are to be submitted on a per/mowing basis. Compensation will be made on a monthly basis, payable at the first of each month. Include all available contact information (phone, mailing address, email, etc.) with your bid.

Submit bid by Saturday, February 14, 2026 to: Columbia Cemetery, P.O. Box 233, Columbia, KY 42728.

Contact Richard Phelps at 270-378-1162 with any questions.

Letter: Quilt project

By Yvonne Kolbenschlag

Some years ago, the Center for Rural Development in Somerset promoted tourism to boost the economy with the concept that the counties consider themselves not as an individual county, but as part of a corridor offering tourism opportunities. I think there were at least 40 counties grouped in corridors of six counties in this major tourism project called TOURSEKY.

Adair County was with five other counties. We worked together on numerous projects, one of which was the barn quilts. Sue Stivers composed a brochure showing photos and descriptions of barn quilts of our corridor. It was entitled "stitched together." She also had additional wooden squares made and painted of quilt patterns, in addition to the ones on barns. These are now displayed in the barn at Homeplace. It was Phil Hannah's idea to hang them there with explanations of the patterns.

The Center for Rural Development provided matched grant money for paint I used to paint quilts on the cement wall by the parking lot at Sav-a-Lot. The quilts pictured are the ones that were mounted in Adair County. At that time the CEO of TOURSEKY was Jeff Crowe. He promoted planting of red bud trees also. So, I painted a crow in a red bud tree as part of the wall of quilts.

EXTRA: At an earlier time, Houchens was located where Sav-a-Lot is. A major fire had blackened the cement wall. REALLY BLACK!! Mike Glasgow brought a tank truck filled with water and blasted the soot away! Not only was that a matching gift-in-kind, but it was also a kind gift!

The wall needs washed again, please.

Water discoloration said to be soap, not antifreeze

While the neon green color that leaked into Town Creek on New Year's Day had the appearance of antifreeze, it is reported to have been a type of soap used by the Carwash near the corner of Campbellsville and Fairground Streets which turns the water color green.

The report of the leak was made by the Carwash to Frankfort so that an MSDS sheet will be available to the city. The environmental response team, division of water, Frankfort, is investigating.

Columbia Adair Utilities District reports that this Town Creek water is not part of our drinking water system.

Carol Perkins: The Ski Trip (Part 2 of 5)

Previous Column: The Ski Trip (Part 1 of 5)

By Carol Perkins

Guy, Judy, and I stepped apprehensively out the back door of the resort and into the brisk night air, wearing our ski boots and carrying our skis. One of the group members who knew how to ski volunteered to give us a few necessary instructions.

"One thing to remember is that when you fall, you can't get back up unless you pop your skis from the ski boot. Then, when you're up, you can put the boot back into the ski. However, don't let that ski get away from you or it will get to the bottom without you."

She effortlessly demonstrated how to pop the skis. We pretended to understand.

Basketball: Lady Indians at Green Co. preview

By Trey Stephens, Staff Writer

The Lady Indians are back on the court on Saturday, January 3, 2026, to face the Green County Dragons (7-5) at Green County. The Lady Indians come off their home loss to Taylor County, and the Dragons come off a 55-39 neutral site loss to Hopkins County Central.

Adair County and Green County share two mutual opponents. Both teams have defeated Marion County; Green County at home by 19, and the Lady Indians on the road by 17. Both teams have fallen to Campbellsville; Green County by six at home and Adair County by 14 on the road.

The names to watch on the Green County roster are a trio of sophomores, Scout Brockman, Molly Dixon, and Chloe Fortner. Each of them average in double figures, led by Brockman who averages almost 17 points per game. Brockman is also the team's leading rebounder, averaging almost nine rebounds a game and nearly averaging a double/double. It is no secret that the Lady Indians did not have the outing that they were hoping for against the Taylor County Lady Cardinals, but bagging a win against a talented Green County team could easily put that in the rear view and keep this team moving in the right direction.

Tip off is scheduled for 6:30pmCT on Saturday, January 3, 2026, at 302 Green County High School, Brummal Ave, Greensburg, KY.

Basketball: Indians vs Trojans preview

By Trey Stephens, Staff Writer

On Saturday, January 3, 2025, the Adair County Indians return to action as they host the Barren County Trojans (9-2). The Indians are fresh off a thrilling 82-80 win over Taylor County, while the Trojans come off a 72-49 home win over Warren East.

The leading scorers for Barren County so far this season are senior Kade Hardy and sophomore Weston Shelton. Both are averaging in double figures with 12.9 points per game and 11 points per game respectively. The name of the game for Barren County thus far has been hindering their opponents' scoring. They have given up a total of just 561 points through 11 games this season, while Adair County has given up some 768 points over 11 games. In fact, Barren County's smothering defense has given up over 60 points only once this year, against Green County in their season opener. Meanwhile, Adair County's explosive offense has produced less than 60 just once this season, in a loss to Campbellsville without two of their top three scorers.

So, in this game something will have to give. Barren County's tough defense, or Adair County's high powered offense, will likely determine who walks away the winner of this one.

Come out and support your Indians in another home contest. Tip off is scheduled for 7:30pmCT on Saturday, January 3, 2026, in John Burr Memorial Gymnasium, 526 Indian Drive, Columbia, KY. Tickets are available at hometownticketing.com.

Basketball: Indians win thriller over Taylor

By Trey Stephens, Staff Writer

On Friday, January 2, 2025. the Adair County Indians Boys Varsity Basketball team defeated arch rival Taylor County 82-80 in a home game thriller.

The Indians went ahead early 2-0 on an explosive dunk from Landon Blakey, before falling behind by double digits. Both teams posted runs leading to the Cardinals having the upper hand 44-36 at the half.

That lead would shrink slightly and steadily, until Adair County recaptured the lead 50-49 for the first time since it was 2-0, with 3:03 left in the third quarter. Taylor County would push back and build up a six point lead by the quarters end. The teams battled throughout the fourth, leading to a tied ball game with 27.9 seconds to go. Ultimately, verything was decided at the free throw line, with Adair County senior Landon Blakey knocking down two free throws for the Tribe to go ahead 80-78, followed by Taylor County senior Bryten Close hitting two of his own to retie the game at 80-all.

Adair County had the final possession of the game, and a chance for the win. Tylin George was clearly fouled, and knocked down clutch free throws to secure an Adair County win 82-80. George was the leading scorer on the night, with 31, followed by Dawson Gilbert with 23, and Landon Blakey with 19. Blakey posted yet another double-double as he added a team-leading 11 rebounds to go along with his 19 points.

All in all, the Indians notch a massive district win against their bitter rival, and will look to ride their three-game winning streak right into a good performance against the Barren County Trojans (8-2) in another home matchup which will get underway at 7:30pmCT on Saturday, January 3, 2026, in John Burr Memorial Gymnasium, 526 Indian Drive, Columbia, KY. Tickets are available at hometownticketing.com.
