Three pediatric influenza deaths reported in state

Frankfort, KY - A total of three children have died from influenza this season in Kentucky. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has described this flu season as the worst in over 15 years.

"We are committed to doing all that we can to protect the health and safety of those in Kentucky," said Dr. Steven Stack, Commissioner of the Department for Public Health. "It is important that we take the necessary precautions, such as staying up to date on vaccinations, washing hands regularly with soap and water, covering coughs and sneezes and staying home when sick, to protect ourselves and our loved ones from the harm that viruses such as influenza and COVID-19 can cause."

Letter: Wonder Burgers were 25 cents in 1955

Sena Schaefer writes:
On the timeline for the 25 cent hamburger - I am unable to vouch for anything in Columbia at the time - I can remember the 25 cent burgers in Owensboro. Wyndall’s Wonder Whip opened on Highway 60 East in 1955. The trademark burger there was called a Wonder Burger & sold for 25 cents. One could buy hamburgers for 15 cents at other places, but those were not equal to the Wonder Burgers which are still being sold today. I am guessing that the sign pictured is from the late 50’s to early 60s. (The current address of the Wonder Whip is 2434 KY 144 - the place hasn’t moved, but the roads have been re-numbered.)

Thank you for writing, Sena! This calls for a road trip to test taste and price a Wonder Burger in 2025. If any Columbia Magazine readers are out in that direction, maybe a food photo will come in. And to think, all I had given Owensboro credit for (in addition to KWC and having two grandsons born there) was Moonlight BBQ. - LW

Sexton Selected for Rural Higher Education Leadership Institute

From Duane Bonifer

Lindsey Wilson College dean Benson Sexton is learning about the common threads that run through nearly three dozen Appalachian colleges and universities. And he hopes the knowledge he gains will help him weave a stronger social fabric for the region.

Sexton, who is a communication professor and dean of the Lindsey Wilson School of Business and Communication, was selected to participate in the Appalachian College Association Rural Higher Education Leadership Institute.

The yearlong program, which is operated in partnership with the higher-education consulting firm Credo, brings together 30 leaders from all areas of the 33 members of the Appalachian College Association. It's focused on professional growth and equipping participants to address opportunities and challenges facing leaders in rural higher education.

Letter: Asian Lady Beetle

Jessica Edwards writes:
There actually is a ladybug that will bite. It's called the Asian Lady Beetle. They look very similar to our native ladybugs, but they have like a M on the white patch behind their heads.

LWC Students use their spring break to study, serve and perform

From Duane Bonifer

For five groups of Lindsey Wilson College students, spring break was a time of learning, service and performance.

The quintet of groups, which included nearly 100 students, learned about service and hospitality at sea, studied nursing practices in the United Kingdom, sang for the U.S. Marines Corps, toured behind the scenes at Walt Disney World and worked on homes in northeastern Florida.

The spring break excursions were the latest examples of the college's efforts to provide students with off-campus learning opportunities that enhance their academic majors and expand their career opportunities.

Recreation, Tourism & Sport Management professor Ginni Dilworth, who oversaw one of the study trips, said the experiences are "incredible educational adventures made possible by Lindsey Wilson's commitment to broadening the student experience."

Letter: Biting bugs

Joyce M. Coomer writes:
Ladybugs, grasshoppers, cicadas, ants, butterflies -- well, the butterfly didn't bite me but sure tried to shove its proboscis through my skin and wouldn't fly away when I swatted at it. If it's a bug of any sort, it'll have some way of 'biting' you . . .

Letter: Asian Lady Beetle

From Veronica Arnold
Adair County Extension Master Gardener

They look like the lady bug, but more orangish in hue... they also hibernate inside homes. Ladybugs hibernate in leaf piles and outside woody debris, not inside. Asian lady beetles also put out that funky musk smell when bothered and disturbed. Like when you vacuum them up... inside and your vacuum smells. I have heard of them biting, but never seen. My $0.02 guess based on description without seeing the insect.
