On the art of turtle catching

By Keith Marcum, Green River Sprite

1972 -- There can usually be a good fish tale found somewhere in Casey County. But this isn't a tale about the one who got away and had very little to do with the actual sport of fishing.

This particular day was a very hot one and so I sat down on one of the benches in the Courthouse yard to rest and cool for a moment. There were three other gentlemen sitting there and I couldn't help noticing their conversation, because they were discussing the various ways to catch a Mud Turtle.

Mr. Amos Marple seemed to really know about the subject of turtles, and their capture, because just as I sat down he was telling the other men about a film he had seen some years ago when in Ohio.

Redefining brat - a change in pop culture

In the world of upside-down pop culture lingo where hot means cool and bad means good, there is a new entry: brat.

Brat doesn't mean a spoiled, misbehaving child in the world of TikTok. Brat can be a noun or adjective and it's always a compliment: carefree, bold, and messy.

Tommy Druen: Remember to take pictures

Previous Column: On issues we can actually address

By Tommy Druen

Memories are funny things. We all have those early recollections that stick with us, but why do certain events remain while others fade? Some of my earliest memories, like my favorite toy or a painful injury, make sense. But others seem utterly random, such as the first time I ever went to Walmart.

Thanks to some online sleuthing, I discovered that the Walmart in my area opened in 1981, just days following my fourth birthday. Imagine the thrill of a four-year-old unexpectedly encountering multiple aisles of toys! Maybe that's why it left such a strong impression on me, yet more likely it was the crowd.

This Walmart wasn't just a local store--it served a region spanning seven or eight counties. And, in those days, big box stores were much smaller. So the place was always packed.

Letter: City Council Meeting of September 3

By Christopher Rowe

Last night I walked downtown to attend the Columbia City Council meeting. I'm a newly arrived (returned, really) citizen and have always taken an active interest in local governance wherever I have lived.

I would like to tell you what I what I saw. In brief, I witnessed the people's business being done judiciously, thoughtfully, effectively, and even with good cheer.

To expand, I saw a Mayor and Council who, when they were not already thoroughly educated on an issue under discussion, asked cogent questions and shared energetic deliberations. When different opinions or options were raised on a given agenda item, those differences were resolved with discussion, not argument, with reason, not impulsiveness.

Across a number of issues ranging from the hopeful (a study of possible structural remediations on the treasured Trabue-Russell House) to the sadly troubling (action needed on derelict properties), the Mayor and each Council Member was always engaged, curious when curiosity was called for, concerned, or even troubled, when the issue was concerning.

It was, simply, exemplary. I can only hope that example will be followed by other local leaders.
