Phillip Wood Coffey - Delight

The late Autumn's chill makes each shiver
The still voice within calms the most livid.
Heroes are made of the young-seldom timid.
Too frequently bold, long gone before the wisdom
Of the aged thoughtfully enters the crevices of the mind.

From WWII: Kilroy is still here

As Veterans are honored this month, a fun memory and tradition from World War II is remembered. It's a classic bit of graffiti: An oval face with a long tubular nose peeping over a wall with the iconic words: Kilroy was here.

Soldiers in World War II found that cartoon everywhere (and drew it everywhere) at military bases on ships and even on battlefields. It was a touch of rebellion, but it became a source of humor and comfort. Kilroy was everywhere and he was first to be everywhere, even on the most remote battlegrounds.

What's lost between pages of an old book?

People working in book stores often make collections of what they find stored and forgotten between the pages of books.

Among the items known to be found in old books: A letter from Mrs. Robert E. Lee, photos, birth certificates, and ticket stubs. Cash is not an unusual find, and love letters are common.

Novelist David Bowman deliberately filled a first edition of his novel, Let the Dog Drive (Penguin USA), with publishers' rejection letters. He sold it for a good price.

Letter: Ripe and ready to make lemonade

Marie Freeman writes:
One year while sitting on my back porch noticed the birds eating sumac years ago. Had always assumed it was poisonous after research found red sumac is actually something you can forage. Good nutritionally, very unique flavor. https://eattheplanet.org/sumac-indian-lemonade/

Pleasantly surprised first time I made lemonade with sumac. Any berries left you can dry and will keep up to a year, grind up use for spice. They will keep up to a year. If they're dried properly. Sumac spice also sells commercially on Amazon, Walmart.

Letter: Keeping traffic off the square

Richard Raines writes:
I think that whatever solution is come up with for big trucks (and for that matter all through traffic) away from the square, we are going to have multiple SHORT signs on each route coming into town (including the Parkway in both directions). If signs are put up that have a lot of information on each sign, drivers are going to miss some of it.

I like to read church signs as I pass, and also other signs showing information that is new to me, and it usually takes me several trips past a bunch of them to get the entire message, and I see 20/20 out of my right eye uncorrected, so no I'm not as blind as a bat, left eye better than 20/40.

Kentucky Color: Sumac

Sumac: "soo' mak" is its common pronunciation. An accepted pronunciation is "shoo' mak" which explains why the Great Wooded South pronunciation was and still is in some corners, "shoo' make"!

"Shoemake" had my childhood imagination tripping! Several scenarios surfaced to no avail. I am forever grateful, both for the ability to read and being introduced to the dictionary! Problem solving is easier when one has many tools in one's toolbox.

There are two types of Sumacs in our area. Both Smooth sumac and Staghorn sumac we notice particularly in the fall because of their black red foliage and their brilliant, waxy red seed pods! The most readily identifiable difference is the lack of fuzzy hair on the stems and leaves of Smooth sumac.

As for a third variety, Poison Sumac, I have never seen. Some sources say it can be found in areas of Eastern and Northern Kentucky and some say it isn't in Kentucky at all. However, since it is only found growing in permanently wet soils or water itself, it is of little concern or consequence for we very special folk living in the Great Wooded South!

As an aside, I am forever grateful to the late Ed Waggener for identifying and naming both Grider Hill Pass and Wheeler Hill Pass. Both are important landmarks on the Elizabethtown-Chattanooga Highway!
