Mable Rose Porter, 89, Russell County, KY (1933-2023) Mable Rose Porter, age 89, of Russell Springs, KY, passed away on Monday May 8th, 2023. She was born June 2nd, 1933, in Ellisburg, KY. Football: Blue Raiders announce 2023 schedule Two years to the day of the program's first NAIA national championship, head coach Phil Kleckler has unveiled the 2023 Lindsey Wilson football schedule. The Blue Raiders will face a 10-game gauntlet comprised of four non-conference foes and six other opponents from within the Mid-South Conference. It all begins on September 2, 2023, in Scotland County, North Carolina, where the locals will open their campaign against the Knights of St. Andrews University. Lindsey Wilson's home opener will take place the following weekend at Parnell Family Stadium when defending national runner-up Keiser University (FL) visits Columbia for the fourth time in four seasons. Letter: Thanks to Janie for Dreamland photos Patty Bunch writes: It's always more interesting reading about people I know, especially this lovely lady. She is a close cousin to my husband, Donnie. Janie visited with us on many of her trips back to Kentucky along with Jim before his tragic death. The receipt from the night spent at Dreamland is pocket change now but for the day was a fair price I'm sure. James N. (Jimmy) McGowan, 78, Columbia, KY (1944-2023) James Neal "Jimmy" McGowan of Columbia passed away on Wednesday, May 10, 2023, at his residence, surrounded by his family. He was 78 years old. Funeral services will be held at 1pmCT on Saturday, May 13, 2023, at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home, 210 Greensburg St., Columbia, KY, with Bro. John Davis and Bro. Adam Shepard officiating. Burial will follow in the Cane Valley Cemetery. Honeymoon at Dreamland, September 1964 Janie (Cape) Goodwin and her late husband, Jim, spent their honeymoon in Kentucky in September 1964. Jane says that Jim had never been to Kentucky, and never met her family in Adair County. They spent one night at the Dreamland Motel in Columbia. Janie sent Columbia Magazine some great photos and a receipt from that visit. She says, "You can see how inflation has affected prices." Janie says, "My Dad was Garvis Ray Cape born in Cundiff, Kentucky (March 14, 1920) to Ivy and Pollie Bunch Cape. My Dad met my Mother, Suzanne Gerlofs, when he was stationed at Fort Custer near Battle Creek, MI before WWII. Dad served in the Normandy Invasion on Utah beach. He passed away on April 18, 1963, from service-related injuries, and is buried in the Burchett Cemetery in Cundiff with his parents and brothers. My Mother passed away February 5, 2022 at the age of 95. She was born here in Michigan and never lived anywhere else. My Dad was an auto body mechanic here in Michigan during his life. My family always vacationed in Kentucky. Jim and I and our sons always came down a couple times a year to visit family. I work on genealogy every day and have since the 1970s. I believe I am related to most everyone in Adair and Russell County." Boy Scouts go camping at Holmes Bend From Xander Makranszky I'm writing to inform you of the Boy Scouts most recent camping trip to Holmes Bend. The boys arrived Friday, April 28th, and set up their camping gear in the primitive section of the camp grounds. The next day, after we ate breakfast and readied ourselves, we rode off to the horse trails, walked down by the lake shore, and picked up trash for the next 2 hours. Afterwards, we piled all the trash bags together and took a few pictures before leaving to walk the mile back to the cars. We drove over to the marina, washed up some, had lunch, and began the Citizenship in Society merit badge, in which we discussed the individuality of people and why it is important to treat everyone equally. After going around the table and giving various answers/examples to different prompts, most all scouts nearly completed the badge. Come to the meeting and get your start to be prepared for the Fair. Participants will be given some plants/seeds to get a head start on their Fair entries. Golf: LWC Women finish runner-up at MSC Championship Bowling Green, KY - The Lindsey Wilson women's golf team finished runner-up at the Mid-South Conference Championship Tuesday at Bowling Green Country Club. The Blue Raiders finished with a 63-over par 927 (313-309-305) over the three-round tournament. Lindsey Wilson finished 26 shots behind tournament champion Cumberlands (KY).
