KADB approves $1.2M for projects across the commonwealth

Frankfort, KY - The Kentucky Agricultural Development Board approved $1,263,891 for agricultural diversification and rural development projects across the commonwealth at its monthly board meeting, including $6,189 for On-Farm Energy Efficiency Incentives in Adair County and $1,500 for the Metcalfe County 4-H Council to purchase 25 hams.

"The Kentucky Agricultural Development Board approves projects that will contribute to a pathway for agricultural diversification across the state," said Commissioner of Agriculture and board chair Dr. Ryan Quarles. "Agriculture is still very strong in Kentucky and projects, such as the ones awarded today, will guarantee that continues into the future."

Basketball: 16th District HS Tournament starts Sunday

The 16th District Basketball Tournament is set to tip off on Sunday, February 19, 2023, at Metcalfe County High School, 208 Randolph St, Edmonton, KY. Metcalfe, Cumberland, Clinton, Monroe, and Russell Counties are in the 16th District.

Cumberland and Russell Co. girls kick things off at 3pmCT, followed by Cumberland and Russell Co. boys at 4:30pmCT. Tickets are $5 cash at the door for ages 6 and up (5 and under are free).

Linda Jean Wallace, 52, McKee, KY (1970-2023)

Linda Jean Wallace of McKee, KY passed away on Thursday, February 16, 2023, at Jewish Hospital in Louisville. She was 52 years old.

A private graveside service will be held at the Russell County Memorial Gardens in Russell Springs, KY.

Great Backyard Bird Count (February 17-20) Underway

Join birdwatchers from all over the world February 17 - 20 by participating in the Great Backyard Bird Count! It's so easy, fun, and helps scientists know more about our birds.

All you have to do is:
  • 1) Decide where you want to watch birds (your yard, Green River Lake, anywhere);

  • 2) Watch/count birds or 15 minutes or more, at least once over the four days (you can submit as many lists as you like);

  • 3) Identify the birds you see or hear w/in your chosen time & location;

  • 4) Submit your list by using the MERLIN BIRD ID app, the eBird Mobile app, or by going to the Great Backyard Bird Count website on your phone or computer.
Watching/counting birds is fun! Participate today in the Great Backyard Bird Count!

Church of God Rummage and Bake Sale on Mar 3/4

The Columbia Church of God Annual Fundraiser, Rummage and Bake Sale will be held from 8amCT to 2pmCT each day on Friday, March 3, 2023, and Saturday, March 4, 2023. The bake sale will include individual baked items as well as whole desserts. Lunch will be available beginning at 11amCT each day, with BBQ sandwiches and 2 sides.

The rummage sale funds our Vacation Bible School and other events throughout the year, and proceeds from the Bake Sale/Lunch will fund our Children's Church annual field trip and help with supplies needed for Children's Church.

Columbia Church of God is located at 708 Mitchell Street, Columbia, KY.

Flags to half-staff in honor of TN National Guard pilots

Frankfort, KY - Gov. Andy Beshear has ordered flags at all state buildings lowered to half-staff, effective immediately, until sunset on Monday, February 20, 2023, in honor of two Tennessee National Guard pilots killed in a UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter crash in Alabama on Wednesday.

One of the pilots, Chief Warrant Officer 3 Danny Randolph of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, participated in search and rescue efforts following the devastating floods in Eastern Kentucky in July 2022. Gov. Beshear said, "We mourn the loss of these heroes and join with Tennessee in honoring their lives and their commitment to their fellow Americans."

Brenda Loy, 74, Columbia, KY (1948-2023)

Brenda Sue (Murphy) Loy passed away on Thursday, February 16, 2023, at her residence, with her family by her side. She was 74 years old.

Funeral services will be held at 1pmCT on Sunday, February 19, 2023, at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home, 210 Greensburg St., Columbia, KY, with Bro. James Judd officiating. Burial will follow in the Antioch Cemetery.

Visitation will be on Saturday from 4pmCT until 8pmCT, and will continue on Sunday morning until time for the service at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home.

Basketball: LWC Men continue hot streak

Lindsey Wilson men's basketball continued its hot streak at home and won its fourth straight game at Biggers Sports Center on Thursday night against the University of the Cumberlands (KY), 89-77. The Blue Raiders improved to 7-7 at home and picked up its 10th win this season.

LWC finished the game with at least four players in double figures and a few just shy in this dominant win.

Joyce Walker, 79, Knifley, KY (1943-2023)

Joyce Walker of Knifley departed this life Tuesday, February 14, 2023 in Louisville at the Norton Hosparus Inpatient Center. She was 79 years old.

The funeral service for Joyce Walker will be held at 1pmET on Monday, February 20, 2023, in the chapel of the L.R. Petty Funeral Home, 1765 New Columbia Rd., Campbellsville, KY, with Bro. Hugh Withers officiating. Burial will follow in the Campbellsville Memorial Gardens.

Visitation is requested on Monday from 11amET until time for the service.

Billy Wallace (Wally) Ellis, Jr., 45, Buffalo, KY (1977-2023)

Mr. Billy Wallace "Wally" Ellis, Jr., of Buffalo, passed from this life on Tuesday, February 14, 2023 at the Baptist Health Hardin Hospital in Elizabethtown. He was 45 years old.

There will be a memorial service to honor the life of Mr. Ellis at 1pmET on Sunday, February 19, 2023, in the chapel of the L.R. Petty Funeral Home, 1765 New Columbia Rd, Campbellsville.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday after NoonET, until time for the service.

Dual Credit enrollment record set at CU

Campbellsville University dual credit achieved record enrollment for the fall 2022 semester, according to recent data from the university.

For the semester, Campbellsville University has a total of 3,699 students enrolled in dual credit courses.

Winter blues may need attention

Some of us notice seasonal affective disorder (SAD) as our spirits begin to feel low when the days are shorter in the winter (also called "winter blues").

SAD is not considered a separate disorder but is a type of depression, characterized by its recurrent seasonal pattern, with symptoms lasting about four to five months per year beginning to feel better in the spring.
