Inaugural Miss Christmas 2022 Pageant in Edmonton

The inaugural Miss Christmas 2022 Pageant will be held on December 3, 2022, in the Metcalfe Co. Middle School Auditorium, 208 Randolph St., Edmonton, KY.

The registration fee is $35.00 per contestant, and there will be a $5.00 door fee. Proceeds from the pageant will benefit Metcalfe Helping Hands, to provide food around Thanksgiving and Christmas gifts for Metcalfe County children and residents, and all proceeds will remain in Metcalfe County. This is a state preliminary pageant and is open for anyone.

Drilling starts up to find oil or Old Bud or both

Miss Vicky writes, “T and B Drilling arrived the day after Halloween to see if they can’t dig out the sinkhole dweller ole Bud Mullins and see if he’s got any oil down there. He supposedly lives in the depression to the right of the drilling equipment. The Bud Mullins tale was meant to keep the neighborhood children in line when I was growing up. Don’t think it worked to well on me and my buddy Maury Moran.”

Reminder: Country Ham Auction is Thursday

Tony Rose, Extension Agent for 4-H Youth Development, sends a reminder that the 2022 4-H Country Ham Auction is coming up at 6pmCT on Thursday, November 3, 2022 at the Adair County Extension Office, 409 Fairground Street, Columbia, KY.

Kynect enrollment is open for 2023 health, dental benefits

Frankfort, KY - On November 1, 2022, Gov. Beshear announced that Kentuckians can now shop and enroll for health and dental coverage that begins in 2023 on the state-based marketplace, kynect.

Kentuckians who don't have coverage through another source, such as through an employer, Medicaid, the Kentucky Children's Health Insurance Program, Medicare or TRICARE, can shop right now for individual coverage on kynect. All plans offered on the marketplace cover 10 essential health benefits, including emergency services, hospitalization, lab services and prescription drugs. Enrollment is open through January 15, 2023.

Kentuckians can browse plans by typing in their zip code on the kynect site. Enrollment assistance is also available by contacting a kynector, someone who is trained to explain coverage options, either online or by calling 855-459-6328. A licensed health insurance agent can also help.

Mary Irene Miller Walker Nell of Columbia, KY, resident of Frankfort, KY, passed away on Saturday, October 29, 2022, at her daughter's residence in Frankfort, KY. She was 107 years old.

Graveside services will be held at 1:30pmCT on Monday, November 7, 2022, at Columbia Cemetery.

Second Pick It Up Columbia Day on Nov 3

Because of the tremendous response to September's Pick it Up Day, the City of Columbia will hold another Pick It Up Day on Thursday, November 3, 2022.

If you have an item that needs to be picked up and taken to the transfer station, you can call City Hall at 270-384-2501. Pick up is limited to one item per household, and the total number of items that can be picked up is limited, so call now!

KSP: Post 15 to conduct traffic safety checkpoints

Kentucky State Police Post 15 will be conducting periodic traffic safety checkpoints in the Post 15 area, which includes Green, Taylor, Marion, Washington, Russell, Casey, Adair, Metcalfe, Monroe, Clinton, and Cumberland counties. These checkpoints will be conducted as part of Post 15's highway safety efforts.

Troopers will be checking for violations of Kentucky traffic and regulatory laws relating to motor vehicle equipment safety, licensing of drivers, motor vehicle registration, and operation of motor vehicle while under the influence of intoxicants.

Treats on the Town a spooktacular event

After an absence of two years, due to Covid, around 400 children along with their parent/guardians had a spooktacular time Halloween evening at Treats on the Town all around the square.

In addition to lots of candy and goodies, the trick or treaters received some other nice loot as well... bracelets, stickers, children's books, coloring books, pictures with some really cool adult Halloween characters, a fire truck, face painting by FBLA high school students and even music by members of the ACHS marching band in front of the Historic Courthouse.

Travel: Fall colors in the Blue Mountains

After speaking to a local from the area, it turns out the most scenic drive to the Needles from our lodging in Monticello, Utah, would be to take the Mountain route through the Abajo Mountains.

We were fortunate enough to experience some Fall colors going on in that part of the Country....and what a contrast to what we would be seeing at the Needles an hour later!

Basketball: LWC Women open season with 2nd straight win

The Lindsey Wilson women's basketball team picked up their second straight win of the season in a 93-56 win over Brescia on Monday at Biggers Sports Center. All 15 Blue Raiders who dressed recorded a point as the team shot 47.9 percent from the floor.

The Adair County Area Book Fair is here: November 4, 2022, from NoonCT until 6pmCT at the Columbia Baptist Church, in conjunction with "To The Nines". There are various local authors who will be available to sign their works. This is a great time to Christmas shop, and locate those hard-to-find special birthday, anniversary and special day presents.

Just about every genre will be present from local history to genealogy, from fiction to non-fiction, from self-help to memoir, from photography to poetry, from inspirational to Christian fiction, from children to adult, and almost everything in between.

Delbert Corbin of Columbia died on Sunday, October 30, 2022 at 2:14 A.M. at his home. He was 92 years old.
