Where are we picture guessed correctly

2022-05-27 - South Central Kentucky - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com.

The recent 'Where are we?' photo was guessed quickly.

Among the responses we got, two were exactly on the mark.

Both Dee Albertson and Chad Price knew the road that winds through the Prices Creek area on the Metcalfe County and Adair County line.

In this picture we were heading east, about to go under the LBN Cumberland Parkway, on the East Fork Road that leads into Prices Creek Road.

Phillip Coffey - Greasy Greedy

GREASY GREEDY by Phillip Coffey
The moistened soil in my yard, lush of grass with Alsike clover slowly rising.
Dusk is leading to less intense shadows, darkness looming, thunder clouds to the north not booming.
Many awaken each morn with thoughts of, 'What great tragedy today be looming?'
The arid Southwest Texas region soaks in disdain from our latest bout with failed system.

So much tragedy among us, myriad of emotions, hardened over time, periodically showing.
Would we continue to strive forward without some coolness found in our calloused soul- bleeding?
Oh! the upheaval and the evil bestowed upon the innocence of children, taking its creeping toll.
Peace - is it hopelessly retreating as legislators follow the scent of the powerful, soaked by the greasy greedy?

Free ACT Retake Day for KY public school students

By Crystal Staley/Scottie Ellis

Frankfort, KY - Gov. Andy Beshear has announced that incoming Kentucky high school seniors who have previously taken the ACT will be eligible to take the test a second time for free during a statewide ACT retake day in the Fall of 2022. The announcement follows national data showing students are more likely to increase their score by retaking the test a second time.

In addition to boosted scores, the ACT retake opportunity is expected to increase the number of students pursuing a post-secondary education.

"The cost of taking the ACT can be a barrier for many of our students, especially if they want to take it a second time to improve their scores," said Kentucky Department of Education Commissioner Jason E. Glass. "This is a great opportunity for those who choose to take part and we appreciate Gov. Beshear making this a priority for Kentucky students."

The date of the free retake day will be designated by the Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) in the Fall of 2022. More information on the date and locations will be provided to local school districts in the coming months.

Carol Perkins: Thrifting

Previous Column: Don't Let The Old Woman In

By Carol Perkins

A friend and I were talking recently about going thrifting. Spending a day browsing through other people's discards is thrilling because I never know what I might find. I have a beautiful vase I bought for three dollars! Thrift stores and yard sales have decreased the stigma of wearing other people's clothes. Consignment shops and eBay (and all the other sites) are popular, and online clothing auctions in demand. If I find a bargain, I love to tell it.

My grandchildren love to go "thrifting." When I am in Austin, Eme knows all the good places. When she comes here, we hit those in Glasgow and Bowling Green. She picks out things for her brothers, too, when they aren't with us. Times have changed from the brand name rage.

When I was young, giving clothes to other people was a touchy situation.
