Sweet William... and its other, odious, name By Mike Watson In England they call it Sweet William. Though the facts are disputed, conventional wisdom has it that Dianthus barbatus is named for William, Duke of Cumberland, who led the English in the 1746 obliteration of the Scots Highlanders at Culloden Moor. Thus the preferred name of the flower in Scotland is Stinking Billy. Native and imported Sweet Williams Donna Rieder writes: Love your photo of the purple flowers, but they are actually Woodland Phlox. They only have 5 petals. Sweet William are in the carnation family and have many ruffled edges just like regular carnations. Just so you know!Donna, thanks for writing. You're absolutely right that the flowers in the photo are often called woodland phlox, but it seems that that name is used nearly interchangeably with wild sweet william to refer to the native American plant Phlox divaricata. It seems to share the name with the carnation family's Dianthus barbatus, which was imported from Europe, because both have 5 petals and both plants tend to flower at around the same time of year.
