Sweet William... and its other, odious, name
By Mike Watson
In England they call it Sweet William. Though the facts are disputed, conventional wisdom has it that Dianthus barbatus is named for William, Duke of Cumberland, who led the English in the 1746 obliteration of the Scots Highlanders at Culloden Moor. Thus the preferred name of the flower in Scotland is Stinking Billy.
