Phillip Coffey - Fowls

FOWLS, By Phillip Coffey
Beautiful, bright Cardinal that I am hearing
Voice so becoming, refreshing - ode to semantics.
Fly out of the bushes, bravely into the clearing.
But no - noisy machine, most foul among us.

Two Downy Woodpeckers in my Silver Maple tree.
Please don't take your searching of varieties of succulence
Elsewhere on a Neighbor's bush - perhaps they can't see
Working away from their homestead, not me - out of season.

Carol Perkins: Three women and Guy

Previous Column: How my garden grows

By Carol Perkins

Three women and Guy. What a brave soul. We booked a week in a condo near Pensacola. My friends, Connie and Mona, and I couldn't wait for time together in the sun after the pandemic shut us out, and Guy looked forward to walking on the beach and sitting on the balcony. What we didn't anticipate was five days of thunderstorms and downpours. A half a day and one full day of clouds was the extent of our beach time.

I should have known the wind wasn't beneath us when I arranged the flight. Not realizing the distance between Panama City and Pensacola, I booked us flying into Panama City, which meant a three-hour drive ahead of us. The Pensacola airport was much closer. Guy didn't complain when we arrived at midnight. We dashed like kids to the balcony to hear the tide roll in and out. The following day the beach was lined with red flags.
