LWC Men's Soccer faces WVa Tech in NAIA opening round

The No. 3-seeded Lindsey Wilson men's soccer team begins the NAIA tournament on Thursday for the 27th time in program history as they begin their hunt for a 10th national title. Standing in their way are the Golden Bears of WVU Tech in the opening round of the Hattiesburg Bracket. Kickoff is set for 4pmCT. Live video and live stats will be available for the match.

The Lindsey Wilson men's soccer team (9-3-2, 8-1-2 MSC) enter the tournament as the No. 3 seed in their opening round bracket taking place in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. The Blue Raiders are joined by opponents No. 1 seed and host William Carey (MS), No. 4 seed Missouri Baptist and No. 2 seed WVU Tech. The winner of the quarterfinal match between the Blue Raiders and the Golden Bears will move onto the final of the opening round tournament and face the winner of the Crusaders and the Spartans for a bid to the final site of the tournament in Columbia County, Georgia.


For the Blue Raiders this season, senior midfielder Cyrus Harmon serves as the anchor for the team's offense, leading the team with 12 goals, 29 points, 46 total shots, and 23 shots on goal. Harmon currently averages 0.86 goals per match, which ranks third in the Mid-South Conference. Senior defender Neville Morgan has recorded a team-high six assists this season, averaging 0.43 per game, the fourth-best in the MSC. On defense, senior goalkeeper David Coffey leads the team with 30 saves on the season, has recorded four shutouts, and currently has a goal against average of 1.21, the fourth-best in the conference. As a team the Blue Raiders have outscored their opponents 37-16 this season, averaging 2.64 goals per game and 1.93 assists per game, the third-best in each category in the Mid-South Conference.

The No. 2-seeded WVU Tech men's soccer team (12-3, 7-1 RSC) enter the NAIA Tournament after winning the River States Conference regular season with a 7-1 conference record.

For the Golden Bears this season, the team's offense is led by senior Pablo Muniz Rocandio who has 11 goals, seven assists, 29 points, 29 shots, and 18 shots on goal, and seven made penalties. Rocandio currently averages 0.85 goals per game, the third-best in the RSC. Assist-wise, Ruben Martin Macias leads the team with eight this season and averages 0.57 per game, the third-best in the RSC. On defense, freshman goalkeeper Jacques D'Monte leads the team with 41 saves on the season, has recorded three shutouts, and currently has a goal against average of 1.47, the best in the River States Conference. As a team the Golden Bears have outscored their opponents 55-19 this season, averaging 3.67 goals per game, the sixth-highest in the NAIA and 2.47 assists per game.

The Blue Raiders hold an 8-0 all-time lead against the Golden Bears, winning the last match played in 2011, 3-1 in Walter S. Reuling Stadium.
