LWC Softball caps off regular season with doubleheader Friday

Kyrin Mayfield

As the regular season draws to a close, the No. 4 Lindsey Wilson softball team faces one final test in the regular-season finale against No. 10 Georgia Gwinnett on Friday. The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 12:30pmCT in Lawrenceville, GA.

Live stats and live video will be available. Please view the Georgia Gwinnett Fan Policy for attendance information.

These two teams faced off earlier in the season on March 10 in Columbia, Ky. The Blue Raiders swept the Grizzlies starting with a 12-3 run-rule win in five innings in the first game. Game two was a nail-biter, as the contest went into extra innings. Lindsey Wilson needed a walk-off two-run home run by Makea-Al Kaluau in the eighth frame to receive the win.

The Blue Raiders (35-5, 27-5 Mid-South Conference) come into the series after struggling offensively last weekend against Bethel (Tenn.). Lindsey Wilson was only able to put up a combined five runs in the four-game series and were shut out in the final two contests.

Despite the rough stretch, the Blue Raiders possess a team batting average of .325 and score 6.3 runs per game, both of which are second in the MSC. Kaluau continues to pace Lindsey Wilson at the plate and leads the team in batting average (.410), runs (34), RBIs (51), and slugging percentage (.836). Additionally, her 15 home runs and 112 total bases are tied for the most in the NAIA.

What the Blue Raiders have lacked offensively, they have made up with stout defensive play. Opposing teams were held to less than two runs in three of Lindsey Wilson's past four games.

Annabelle Ramirez, the reigning MSC Player of the Week, is in the midst of a historic season with an 0.93 ERA, which is on pace to be the second-lowest ERA in a single season in program history, and an NAIA-best 12.9 strikeouts per seven innings. Additionally, she ranks fourth in the country with an opposing batting average of .124. Over her previous two starts, she allowed no earned runs, five hits, and struck out 25.

Georgia Gwinnett (26-10) is currently marching through the toughest part of its schedule, as each of the Grizzlies' previous six games were against ranked opponents. Offense has also been a recent issue due to the team scoring under three runs five times during that six-game stretch.

Piper Wagner is one of the most dangerous hitters in the Grizzlies' order. Her 25 runs, 26 RBIs, 15 doubles, and four home runs are all team-highs. Lea McFadden is also known to be a threat with her .407 batting average, a mark that is the highest on the squad.

Defensively, Georgia Gwinnett boasts one of the best pitching staffs in the Association of Independent Institutions with the lowest ERA (2.24) and second-lowest opponent batting average (.230). Additionally, the Grizzlies have limited the opposition to just 14 runs over the past 10 games.

Alexa Good is the top arm in the rotation with a 1.42 ERA and .179 opponent batting average. Her 160 strikeouts over 132.2 innings pitched are more than any other pitcher in the AII.
