Remembering Kathy Goode

By Mark Hale

I want to give a little history of a dear friend that lost her life in an auto accident on Thursday, Kathy "Kat" Goode of Casey County.

Kathy and I worked together in the 80s and 90s at WGRB TV 34. We produced programs, news and commercials in the production department. Kat was a graduate of Spaulding University and had been a proof reader for the Courier Journal before coming to the station. She was a literary genius and could point out my misspellings and grammatical errors instantly. It always made me mad how quickly she could see them.

We worked alongside each other for 5 years I guess until she sought the larger lights of the big city and branched out on a journey to New Orleans, LA. There she worked in a similar capacity for COX Cable systems. Before she left though she gave Michele and I a forever wedding gift by being one of two videographers at our wedding. It will always be a special memory for me.

After a few years in New Orleans she returned home to be close to her aging mother. She started her own media business with video camera and the like doing custom services for anybody needing her expertise. She later landed the job of her true passion. The county library in Liberty. She was a favorite to all who enjoyed her passions of literature. Occasionally we would meet and talk and reminisce of times gone by.

Kathy was a dear friend to Michele and I and so many of us from WGRB. Her untimely death is a tragedy for all who knew her. I am personally grateful for the time I had to call her my friend.

My sentry duty days are long gone

By Phillip Coffey

I have hearing impairments. No longer can I be a Sentry protecting the lives of others. The distant rolling of thunderous charges of enemy approaching is faint. Long gone are the days when I can hear the beating drums of approaching armies or the hoofs of "The Four Horseman" quickly approaching. Others must take the reins to listen attentively.

I must seek solitude among the masses. Fear and dread escapes me, I must laugh often. I called Mom this morning to make sure that she had taken her meds. I asked her, "have you eaten and popped your pills?"

Musical heritage of the Commonwealth spotlighted in new map

By Chuck Wolfe

Frankfort, KY - Kentucky's rich and varied musical heritage is highlighted and celebrated in the 2020-2021 Official Highway Map of the Bluegrass State.

"Music is part of life in Kentucky and crosses many genres," Gov. Andy Beshear said. "By the same token, our official highway map is much more than a display of route lines and numbers. It symbolizes connection to the things and places that matter most to us."

The Official Highway Map of Kentucky has been a trusted navigation aid for motorists since first published by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) in 1929. It has evolved over the years to include information that affords travelers a glimpse of what Kentucky has to offer in recreation, history, food, adventure and the arts.

That includes a culture of music traceable along specific routes, such as the U.S. 23 "Country Music Highway" linking birthplaces of such stars as Loretta Lynn, Dwight Yoakam, Patty Loveless, Ricky Skaggs, Tyler Childers and others.

The map also notes Kentucky natives Bill Monroe, father of Bluegrass Music; balladeer John Jacob Niles; famed folk singer Jean Ritchie; country's Merle Travis; rockers Don and Phil Everly, and "newgrass" pioneer Sam Bush.

As the new map aptly states, "Kentucky's musical journey travels many roads."

CLC / Jim Blair Park now fully owned by County

By Linda Waggener

It was a hard choice for both City and County governments, but it's final. After mediation to settle disagreements, followed by unanimous voting by both Fiscal Court and City Council, Blair Park will be under full ownership and management of the County. Use of the Park reservation calls may be made to 270-384-4703.

After purchase from the Columbia Baptist Church, the Christian Life Center/Blair Park and Recreation Center at 901 Hudson Street in Columbia had been owned 50-50 by the City and County.

Over the years and different administrations, it has had many management struggles. There have been times when each entity carried the other as hard times came and went for both.

Governor's Thursday update

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - Gov. Andy Beshear on Thursday updated Kentuckians on the state's ongoing efforts to fight the novel coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) as cases continue to rise in the commonwealth.

"What we are seeing across the country is alarming. We are seeing state after state not just facing escalating cases, but facing devastation," said Gov. Beshear. "As of today, Florida's hospitals have now run out of ICU beds. This is when people die because the system is overwhelmed. People are going to die who would not otherwise have died. In Arizona and Texas they are bringing in refrigerated trucks because people are dying so fast, there is no room for them in morgues. That ought to convince everybody of the seriousness of the situation we face and what a critical moment right now is."

As of 4 p.m. July 16, Gov. Beshear said there were at least 21,083 coronavirus cases in Kentucky, 413 of which were newly reported Thursday.

The Governor reemphasized that the rising case numbers show the need for everyone to wear a face covering in public or in close quarters with non-immediate family members, as required by his mandate.
