Beverly McGowan very much in wrong list in Class of 1961 story Jimmy McGowan, Beverly McGowan's sister and he ought to know, called CM to tell us the good news that the story, Adair County High School Class of 1961 50th Year Class Reunion, was in error when it listed Beverly in the paragraph of those who are deceased. Unilaterally, without asking the esteemed author of the piece, we've moved Beverly McGowan's name from "Deceased Members," to the list "Members for Whom We Lack Information," because, in this case, this is the case. "She's very much alive," McGowan said. -EW, factotum. 2011-10-13 11:21:15 | Comments | Printable version

Victoria Pike issues statement on Wet/Dry, other issues Says we aren't stopping alcohol use with prohibition, just encouraging people to go out of town to shop. She even wants to keep both Armitages. 'No matter what your opinion on the sale of alcohol or any other good or service in our community, we don't need to be running folks away, but instead we need to be attracting them.' -VICKY PIKE By Victoria Pike Commentary and personal opinion of Victoria Pike It is my opinion that if people want something, you provide it and collect the tax revenue on it in your county. Lois Cunningham comments on wet/dry Comments re article 47523 Tiffany Kessler Against legal sale of alcoholic beverages Lois Cunningham writes: I agree that there are probably not enough people in Adair County who will stand up and agree that alcohol should be sold here. But a lot of those same people drive to Sims or Bowling Green and buy their alcohol; they may be even foolish enough to go to the local bootlegger and pay their prices. it is a mindset which says , "As long as no one else knows, it is ok." If you would admit that having a drink with dinner, or a bottle of beer while watching football is something you do and enjoy, wouldn't we all be more honest with ourselves and with everyone else too. - LOIS CUNNINGHAMThanks. A clarification on what I think. I think there are more than enough people to vote for a change in the law. What I think is that leaders don't lead when they should. Change seems to happen only when we, the people, demand it. I personally think that a vote would change the law here. I think a vote should be taken. I don't think it will make so much difference in consumption, or local taxes directly collected, but I do think it will have a dramatic positive effect on all restaurants here, both those who choose to sell alcoholic beverages and those who do not. -ED WAGGENER 2011-10-13 10:37:09 | Comments | Printable version

Tiffany Kessler: Against legal sale of alcoholic beverages Tiffany Kessler writes: I for one am offended by Mr. Armitage's comments about Adair County living in the "dark ages". If he so badly wants to enjoy a drink with his meal he has every right to MOVE to Campbellsville and enjoy all he wants. There are not enough proponents for legalizing alcohol in Columbia (thank God)...it's time to leave the topic alone. -TIFFANY KESSLERThanks, Tiffany, for sharing your opinion, wrongheaded as we think it to be. We'd a lot rather have Wayne Armitage living in Columbia, KY than let him move away.
