Organ Donation, the Gift of Life, greatest gift we can give

Commentary by Bobby D Morrison

It is hard to believe that Adair County is ranking so low. We care about our people, but it is not shown by our response to the donor sign up.

Birds of Kentucky: An unskittish killdeer

2011-10-12 - Old Mullinix Farm, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener.
One of the most beautiful year round birds in Adair County is the killdeer. The birds are often difficult to photograph during nesting season, but at this time of the year, they seem anxious to pose, as this one did this morning, Wednesday, October 12, 2011, on the Greenhills Side of Russell Creek, Columbia, KY.

Just in: President Obama comments on passage of trade agreements

Statement by the President on the Passage of Trade Agreements and Trade Adjustment Assistance. Says passage will boost exports of 'Made in America' labeled products:
The landmark trade agreements and assistance for American workers that passed tonight are a major win for American workers and businesses. I've fought to make sure that these trade agreements with South Korea, Colombia and Panama deliver the best possible deal for our country, and I've insisted that we do more to help American workers who have been affected by global competition. Tonight's vote, with bipartisan support, will significantly boost exports that bear the proud label "Made in America," support tens of thousands of good-paying American jobs and protect labor rights, the environment and intellectual property. American automakers, farmers, ranchers and manufacturers, including many small businesses, will be able to compete and win in new markets. I look forward to signing these agreements, which will help achieve my goal of doubling American exports and keeping America competitive in the 21st century.

Columbia's Crackerjack City Council of 1902

But either it or the News not up to standards of today's City Council or today's CM: No mention made of either Joe Moore or Robert Flowers adjourning the Council, JIM notes -CM

By JIM

Columbia's Town Board made hay in 1902, sunshine or not. The News of January 14, 1903 unequivocally stated that the Council "has accomplished more and done it on much less money than any similar body of men that has ever had the affairs of this town in charge."

For 1902, the City had a operating budget of $1,482.02. Of that, the Council spent less than 60% ($852.37, for the bookkeepers and bankers in the audience) and what the citizens of Columbia got for their collective nickel made an impressive list:

Be good to your lungs this year, skip the annual leaf burning. Instead bag your leaves and call on the Adair County Garden Club to come and collect them. Several members of the ACGC are available to collect bagged leaves. The leaves are mulched and turned into healthy compost for our gardens. Contact Barbara Armitage at 270-250-2979 to arrange for pick-up.

News from the Adair County Garden Club

There are so many things that I remember from my childhood that I wish I could bring back, the smell of orange blossoms on the trees in my own backyard, all of us kids screaming and running when my grandfather would dump a "croaker sack" of crabs in the kitchen floor but there are some things better left in the past.

Adair County's Organ Donation signup is lackadaisical

The Telemetric Observer says Adair County qualifies for nearly 8th place in 7 county area when Organ Donation is compared to population. The question: WHY? In this most giving of counties, is this utlmate practice of the Golden Rule, so low? so un-Christian? So unlike Jesus, who, We Believe, would have been first in line at the clerk's office to sign a donation card. Which only matters to Christians who like Christ's teachings, or course. Is it time for the Adair County Ministerial Association to roll tanks - so to speak? -CM

The Telemetric Observer

Although 125 Adair Countians have signed organ donation cards since early July, Adair's overall participation remains firmly entrenched in the land of lackadaisical.
