Carol Perkins: Celebration, Now, Come On

Previous Column: Swimmy Head

By Carol Perkins

The old Metcalfe County High School gym rocked Friday afternoon when around 200 elementary students danced, jumped in the bouncy houses, and ate all the popcorn, pizza, and water they could hold. What a joy to see so much organized chaos among young students at the After School Sock Hop.

First, we checked the permission slips to see who would pick them up. We mostly know each other, but you never know! Then we collected admission money and told them to hold on to their snack money.

"I don't have any snack money," a few would say, but we told them all would be okay.

From Miss Donna Rieder
"Grief is just really love. It's all the love you want to give, but now cannot. All that unspent love gathers up in the corners of your eyes, in the lump in your throat, in that hollow part of your chest. Grief is just love with no place to go." -Jamie Anderson

Happy Earth Day 2026 - how we celebrate

For over a quarter of a century Columbia Magazine has been celebrating the people and land of our region - we have the blessings of living in peace, in a magical landscape, green, well watered, level to rolling landscape.

Today, Earth Day 2026, we honor and think about how we are caring for our place. From the thousands of photos in our archives, it looks like we're doing a pretty good job. The first Earth Day took place on April 22, 1970. Recognized by many as the birth of the U.S. environmental movement, the nationwide demonstration spurred a dramatic rise in public concern about environmental issues. In the 50 years since its creation, Earth Day has grown into an event observed by a billion people in nearly 200 countries each year.

American Bittern spotted in Adair Co.

According to eBird's Adair County Rare Bird Alert, birders Nathan Kunze and Logan Anderson reported an American Bittern (Botaurus lentiginosus) in Adair County on April 21, 2026.

Their checklist is marked near the junction of Duckbill Road and Corp Road, across the road from the Janice Holt Giles Cabin. The location link for the sighting is maps.google.com.

All About Birds says "You'll need sharp eyes to catch sight of an American Bittern. This streaky, brown and buff heron can materialize among the reeds, and disappear as quickly, especially when striking a concealment pose with neck stretched and bill pointed skyward. These stealthy carnivores stand motionless amid tall marsh vegetation, or patiently stalk fish, frogs, and insects. They are at their most noticeable in spring, when the marshes resound with their odd booming calls that sounds like the gulps of a thirsty giant."

Genealogy & History Research Center celebrates 5 years open

From Mike Watson

The Adair Genealogy & History Research Center recently celebrated the fifth anniversary of the first day open--19 April 2021. It is hard to believe this will be five full years of activities here--nearly 250 history/genealogy meetings and/or classes, over five thousand visiting researchers, thousands of email and face book and telephone questions answered.

We invite anyone and everyone who hasn't visited us to date--and of course anyone who has been here to visit or research--to visit the Research Center, look at our changing exhibits, and research or just visit.

-Mike, Annita, Serena, and Ernie

A personal journey to community health vision

By Mig Feuser / The Adair Progress

A new locally owned fitness facility has opened its doors in Columbia, with a focus that goes beyond traditional workouts and aims to build a healthier community.

Infinity Fitness & Wellness Center, founded by O'Shaughnessy Frazier and his wife, Shantila Rexroat Frazier, opened last Friday, though final preparations have faced some unexpected delays. Frazier said the opening timeline has been impacted by equipment issues tied to supply complications.

"The equipment company that we purchased it from has sold the plates off of our equipment," Frazier said. "Mine's been paid for about a year now, and they were storing it for me. Now, since the tariffs hit, they couldn't get mine in from China, so they couldn't deliver it. That's pushed me behind opening a whole month because of that."
