Lindsey Wilson College Director of Health Services Tamara Coots sees about 30 students a week at the college's student health services center, which is in the basement of Phillips Hall. The college has a partnership with Cumberland Family Medical, which she says makes it "like having a doctor's office on campus."

Tamara Coots helps keep LWC students healthy, educated

Tamara Coots' title at Lindsey Wilson College is director of health services, but she could also be called "student health adviser."

Coots oversees the college's student health services center in the basement of Phillips Hall, where she and the college's seven athletic trainers meet students' wide range of health and medical needs.

Coots, who is also a clinical instructor in Lindsey Wilson's top-ranked nursing program, stays plenty busy during the semester. For example, last fall, she saw about 350 students, which averaged about 30 visits a week.

Through a special arrangement with Cumberland Family Medical, Lindsey Wilson's health services center offers students and employees many of the benefits of visiting a doctor, thanks to a telehealth service called Tyto Care.

College students should plan to file FAFSA early in 2025

Click headline to see schedule of free Lindsey Wilson FAFSA workshops for students.

January is a critical month for students who plan to attend college in 2025-26. That's when students should work on their Free Application for Federal Student Aid.

"One of the things that all college students and prospective college students should resolve to do in January is to start working on their Free Application for Federal Student Aid," said Lindsey Wilson College Director of Student Financial Aid Audrey Price. "It's one of the most important processes a student will complete."

Better known as the FAFSA, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid is the bedrock of almost all colleges' student financial aid. On the federal level, the FAFSA is used to determine if a student is available for a Pell grant, a need-based grant which ranges from $740 to $7,395 for eligible students.

For Kentucky residents who attend a Kentucky college or university, the FAFSA is used to help determine if a student is eligible to receive a College Access Program grant, a need-based grant worth up to $5,300. The FAFSA is also used to award a Kentucky Tuition Grant, a need-based grant worth up to $3,300 that Kentucky residents can use at one of the commonwealth's 18 independent colleges or universities, such as Lindsey Wilson.

Basketball: ACHS to face Southwestern High School on the road

By Trey Stephens, Staff Writer

The Adair County Indians Boys Basketball team returns to action today on the road, to face the Southwestern Warriors (8-4). The game tips at 6:30pmCT/7:30pmET on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, at Southwestern High School, 1765 WTLO Road, Somerset, KY.

Both teams have had a week off since their last game, the Indians with a win over Glasgow, and the Warriors with a win over Wayne County 69-53.

The Indians will look for a repeat of their recent matchups with the Warriors, with wins in 2022 and 2023. The Indians, however, will be seeking this third win in what has been a hostile road environment for visiting teams, as Southwestern has gone 5-1 at home this season.

Veterans Banners to be retired

From Tiffany Collins

The City of Columbia has had a tremendous response with the veterans banners program over the last three years. In 2024 we had close to 100 banners around the Square and the areas immediately off of the Square, recognizing veterans from our community.

As mentioned when we started the program, we will be rotating the banners out after three years, and retired banners will be distributed to family members.

The following banners will be rotated out this year:
Phillip Gaskins, Derek Cundiff, Randall Jones, Joe Payne, Leland Grant, Wallace Alexander, Bobby Kimbler, Bernard Dunn, Sammy Hughes, Charlie Morrison, James Abell, John Burr, Paul Smith, Michael Callison, Orvin Grider, Travis Giles, Vince Giles, Ronald Burton, Brad Scholl, Joe Spires, Tommy Corbin, C.W. Grant, Bernard Janes, William Coy Turner, Joe Hare, Ronnie Holt, Russell Arnold, and Walter Gene Hoots.

Banners will be available to be picked up beginning on Tuesday, January 21, 2025, at City Hall, 116 Campbellsville Street, Columbia, KY.

"We appreciate everyone who has participated and taken part in this program honoring our local veterans," said Mayor Hoots.

Over the years many onlookers have inquired about having a wedding on the grounds, a celebratory anniversary party, family portrait or even their senior pictures.
