College students should plan to file FAFSA early in 2025 Click headline to see schedule of free Lindsey Wilson FAFSA workshops for students. January is a critical month for students who plan to attend college in 2025-26. That's when students should work on their Free Application for Federal Student Aid. "One of the things that all college students and prospective college students should resolve to do in January is to start working on their Free Application for Federal Student Aid," said Lindsey Wilson College Director of Student Financial Aid Audrey Price. "It's one of the most important processes a student will complete." Better known as the FAFSA, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid is the bedrock of almost all colleges' student financial aid. On the federal level, the FAFSA is used to determine if a student is available for a Pell grant, a need-based grant which ranges from $740 to $7,395 for eligible students. For Kentucky residents who attend a Kentucky college or university, the FAFSA is used to help determine if a student is eligible to receive a College Access Program grant, a need-based grant worth up to $5,300. The FAFSA is also used to award a Kentucky Tuition Grant, a need-based grant worth up to $3,300 that Kentucky residents can use at one of the commonwealth's 18 independent colleges or universities, such as Lindsey Wilson. "With so much potential financial aid at stake, it's critical for students and their family members to start working now on their FAFSA for the 2025-26 school year, even if they are not yet sure which school they plan to attend," said Price. "It's more important than ever for students to complete their FAFSA as soon as possible because we have been told that there is a risk of state financial aid running out sooner than normal in 2025-26." The federal government unveiled a new FAFSA for the 2024-25 school year, and the rollout was beset with problems and missed deadlines. That debacle made what can already be a complicated process even more frustrating for college students and their families. This year, the FAFSA was made available to all students two months later than its planned October 1 unveiling, but Price said that most of the glitches have been worked out and students have been able to start applying for financial aid for the 2025-26 school year since early December. "Lindsey Wilson was part of a select group of schools who got to be part of a beta test for this year's FAFSA, so we had an early look at it," she said. "The FAFSA has been simplified and there are fewer questions for students and families to answer, which should make the process go a lot smoother this year." To make the FAFSA process go even smoother for current and prospective students, Lindsey Wilson's financial aid office will hold 10 FAFSA workshops from Jan. 23-March 20. The workshops, which will be held in the college's Katie Murrell Library, are free and open to Lindsey Wilson students as well as the general public. "Regardless where a student plans to attend college in 2025-26, we want to be able to offer our assistance to that student and their family members because it's important that all students have access to the most financial aid possible," said Price. The times and dates for the free Lindsey Wilson FAFSA workshops, which will be held in the college's Katie Murrell Library, are:
