Kalender remembered by local leader in Diagnostic Imaging By Ben Arnold, PhD, Columbia, KY The World has lost one of the greatest minds and most impactful figures in Diagnostic imaging worldwide. It was suggested by fellow scientists in Europe that he should have been considered for a Nobel Prize for his leading work on developing the modern versions of spiral CT scanners. He was an outstanding scientist with over 300 publications and 30 patents. He was buried in his hometown of Mohrendorf, Germany. We will miss him. A tribute I wrote to his online Tribute Board follows: Willi Kalender PhD left a great body of work in the medical imaging field that will last into the distant future. He was awarded the highly regarded Latsis Prize from the European Science Foundation (it's highest honor) and the top recognition of the United States Radiology and Imaging Society, the RSNA and many other awards. ACHS Boys Basketball schedule for 2024-2025 Adair County High School Boys Basketball play will begin on Wednesday, November 27, 2024, in scrimmages with Varsity, JV, and Freshmen teams from North Hardin High School. The Varsity team will play again on Saturday, November 30, 2024, in the Zip Zone Classic. Carol Perkins: Thanksgiving Previous Column: In the Pursuit of Happiness By Carol Perkins A time to be thankful for family, friends, and our community. A time to reflect. A time to appreciate the little things like a glass of tea, a box of Honey Nut Cheerios, and a sugar-free cookie. That is my plan for this Thanksgiving Day. I'll confess that Thanksgiving was once a hassle. We attended several dinners and carried a covered dish or two with us. Run here and run there. Even though the houses were crowded, we avoided tripping over people's feet. Remember when the men ate first, the kids had their own table, and the women were left with a turkey that looked like a shell of a bird? The men never helped clean up, and some women disappeared when they heard the dishwater running. We crammed so much into one day because both parents wanted Thanksgiving on the exact day. Because of the hassle, I don't think I took the time to be thankful. OCC 2024: Over 3,000 shoebox gifts collected so far From Mark Fudge In 2023, Adair County collected 3,300 shoebox gifts. The most boxes ever collected in Adair County was in 2015 when 3,777 shoe boxes were collected. With drop offs Friday from the ACHS Lady Indians, ACHS FCA, and Columbia United Methodist Church, Adair County has now collected over 3,000 shoebox gifts for the second year in a row. Three days of drop offs still remain. Boxes can be dropped off at the Columbia First Church of the Nazarene Wheet Fellowship Hall through Monday at these times:

ACMS students experience global cultures at Lindsey Wilson By Venus Popplewell LWC Director of Public Relations More than 600 Adair County Middle School students were introduced to a variety of cultures, languages, and customs on Cultural Awareness & Diversity Day. The event, designed to immerse students in different cultures, was brought to life by the vibrant and diverse international student community at Lindsey Wilson College. "I think it's really important for our students to have this exposure," said ACMS Librarian Rebecca Ungerer. "Columbia is a small town, and we don't have a huge metropolitan area that we can just drive to quickly and get those experiences and exposure to different arts and cultures. This event is like bringing a major city to Adair County." LWC undergraduate and graduate international students from 13 countries attended the Cultural Awareness & Diversity event on November 15, 2024. Along with providing a unique opportunity for area students, the event also strengthened the experience of LWC international students studying in the U.S. by giving them a sense of pride and belonging in the Columbia-Adair County community.
