Carol Perkins: Thanksgiving Previous Column: In the Pursuit of Happiness By Carol Perkins A time to be thankful for family, friends, and our community. A time to reflect. A time to appreciate the little things like a glass of tea, a box of Honey Nut Cheerios, and a sugar-free cookie. That is my plan for this Thanksgiving Day. I'll confess that Thanksgiving was once a hassle. We attended several dinners and carried a covered dish or two with us. Run here and run there. Even though the houses were crowded, we avoided tripping over people's feet. Remember when the men ate first, the kids had their own table, and the women were left with a turkey that looked like a shell of a bird? The men never helped clean up, and some women disappeared when they heard the dishwater running. We crammed so much into one day because both parents wanted Thanksgiving on the exact day. Because of the hassle, I don't think I took the time to be thankful. As the older generation left us, I started having Thanksgiving at our house. The turkey went in the oven early. I enjoyed being the hostess rather than the guest. The pile of dirty dishes didn't bother me. However, I don't think I took the time to be thankful. Jump a few decades ahead. Our parents are gone or not able to take part in the day. Our children live in different states, and we can't seem to find time to get together. Our siblings have their family gatherings. So, Guy and I look at each other and wonder where the best place to eat a turkey dinner would be. We don't mind because we are grateful our children have their traditions with their children. (Texas is a long way to go for a turkey leg.) We will go to Carla's over the weekend. That suits us fine. We're not stuck on a day. Sometimes it's nice to sit still on a holiday, read a book, watch a movie, and make a gratitude list. Put this list in a drawer and bring it out next year. Our lists would likely be very similar. At the top would be how grateful I am to have been born in America, where our Thanksgiving celebration began in 1621. We are lucky to be so lucky. You can contact Carol at carolperkins06@gmail.com.
