ACMS students experience global cultures at Lindsey Wilson

By Venus Popplewell
LWC Director of Public Relations

More than 600 Adair County Middle School students were introduced to a variety of cultures, languages, and customs on Cultural Awareness & Diversity Day. The event, designed to immerse students in different cultures, was brought to life by the vibrant and diverse international student community at Lindsey Wilson College.

"I think it's really important for our students to have this exposure," said ACMS Librarian Rebecca Ungerer. "Columbia is a small town, and we don't have a huge metropolitan area that we can just drive to quickly and get those experiences and exposure to different arts and cultures. This event is like bringing a major city to Adair County."

LWC undergraduate and graduate international students from 13 countries attended the Cultural Awareness & Diversity event on November 15, 2024. Along with providing a unique opportunity for area students, the event also strengthened the experience of LWC international students studying in the U.S. by giving them a sense of pride and belonging in the Columbia-Adair County community.

"I have really enjoyed this event," said LWC sustainability and environmental studies senior Karolina Bidnik from Warsaw, Poland. "We are teaching the school children about our countries. I loved talking about my country, and when I saw the children enjoying that, it was quite nice."

Bidnik, who is a member of the LWC women's swimming program, was one of 19 LWC international students who participated in the event. The middle school students visited 12 stations for the countries represented. The LWC international students shared a short presentation about their native country. Each middle school student was given a "passport" signed by the LWC student representative from each station.

The LWC international students extended their experience by sharing lunch with the ACMS students after the event.

"I have been very touched by the way the students are responding to the presenters," Ungerer said. "Before the event, I talked to our students about what it means to live internationally. Our students are learning that these international students are just like them - they miss their home and their cultural foods, just like we would. It's been exciting for me to see some of our more reserved students open up and talk to the college students here today. This is an event I hope we can do every year."

The countries represented by Lindsey Wilson College at the ACMS Cultural Awareness & Diversity Day were: China, Thailand, Morocco, Venezuela, Germany, Poland, the Netherlands, South Africa, Japan, South Korea, Ghana, Spain, and Paraguay.
