Letter: Occupational Tax

Bryan New writes:
I understand the need for taxes, and I would like to interject that we also have an alcohol tax. Is that tax not being utilized? Couldn't the taxes on vices be raised? Couldn't that offset something?

It just seems like when one receives a raise that not long after the government at some level wants to raise taxes. And with inflation and high interest rates eating away at our pocketbooks its demoralizing when you're hit with more taxes and you have diminishing disposable income.

Furthermore, seems to me the county should use as many incentives as it can to draw more businesses and companies into the county that would therefore create hundreds more jobs, and thereby create more tax revenue.

Raising taxes is always the easy way out. How about creating a larger tax base that would generate more revenue for the county?

Proud to see deal worked out on pay for deputies

By Vicky Pike

I was so glad a proposal by Magistrate Chris Reeder to increase deputy pay by $5 per hour was passed Tuesday night. Thank you to Chris for his work on this proposal. Hallelujah we will have our Sheriff's Department better staffed if we have an emergency or worse what happened in Russell County.

I won't go to the negative side here at placing blame. It's not about how much one dislikes another. It's about our Sheriff's deputies that have stuck with us like deputy Gary Roy said. Attached is a very happy picture of Judge Bryant and Magistrate Reeder.
