Metcalfe Chamber of Commerce holds fall event

By Kim Harwood, Executive Director
Edmonton Metcalfe Chamber of Commerce

The Edmonton-Metcalfe County Chamber of Commerce hosted the fall Chamber Breakfast Tuesday morning, September 24th in the Old School Gym.

A record breaking 100 was the number anticipated at the breakfast however due to heavy rain and sickness there were some empty seats. It may have been a wet morning, but the crowd was upbeat and had the opportunity to visit while enjoying another delicious breakfast by Chamber member, Diane's Cakes & Catering. The tables were decorated with beautiful mums from Colton Huffman and pumpkins from Slinker Farms.

Chamber President, Daniel Bragg welcomed the crowd and Josh Hurt gave the invocation.

On September 24, of 2019 Chamber President Torrie Osbon provided the historical summary of the 25 Years of the Metcalfe County Chamber of Commerce. Five years later Chamber President Daniel Bragg provided the 30 years summary of the biggest little Chamber in the Commonwealth, five years later to the day.

Daniel shared the history from Newspaper articles dating back to August & September of 1973 when the Chamber held an organizational meeting, installed officers, and discussed how the Chamber of Commerce could contribute to the community. Copies of the articles were provided to each table. The September 5th edition of the Edmonton Herald News named the officers as President, Richard Duncan, Vice President, Bobby Branstetter, Secretary/Treasurer, Nell Vanzant, and Gary Acree, Executive Vice President. Daniel went on to say it is uncertain when this group dissolved, or why.

However, time past and the chamber was originally incorporated on February 13, 1986, by 16 members. The chamber office was not established until its revitalization in 1994, that September Gaye Shaw was hired and served as the Executive Director until she retired in December 2021. The chamber office had a few temporary homes until 2000 when it was permanently located in the Bill Wilson Building. The memberships have grown a bit from 32 in 1987, with 379 in 2020, 401 in 2021, 423 in 2022, and 425 in 2023.

Daniel went on to talk about the growth of the Welcome Baskets for newcomers which started in 2004. He thanked those who make the baskets possible and reported baskets were given to 18 new residents in 2021, 19 in 2022, and 22 in 2023. A basket was displayed at the sign in table to show how the basket looks once it is packaged and ready to give out.

In 2023 the new and improved website launched with a fresh look and more functionality. The site offers up to date information for those considering a move to Metcalfe County and to those who live here.

The Achilles Award was established in 2023 in memory of Bill & Chris Lagermann's loyal companion. Achilles was the big white dog that came to most every event and was loved by the community. The award does not come with ribbons or money, but it honors a deserving Metcalfe Countian each quarter for a good deed or deeds that deserve recognition.

After reminiscing and celebrating the Edmonton-Metcalfe County Chamber of Commerce it was time to recognize Metcalfe Farm Supply as Business of the Quarter. Barney Withers, with his wife Nancy by his side accepted the award and expressed his appreciation to the chamber and the community for their support.
