Hedgepath: Employees make CU a special place

By Gerard Flanagan

Campbellsville, KY - Speaking recently at Campbellsville University's Faculty and Staff Recognition Service, Dr. Donna Hedgepath took some time to thank her colleagues for the thoughtfulness and kindness they have shown during her 20 years as a Campbellsville University employee.

"The moments, the recognitions, the receptions and lunches and cards and gifts, just overwhelming. But at the same time, I'm not surprised because that's just who you all are. You're just so kind and thoughtful, she said.

Hedgepath, who served as CU's provost and vice president for academic affairs before becoming the 14th president of Wayland Baptist University on July 1, 2024, shared that working at CU had always been a dream job while she was a student.

"Now that I am here, and I have worked here this long, about 20 years full-time, to think that I am leaving seems kind of crazy to me, because I never thought I would," Hedgepath said.

Letter: Piebald whitetail

Kristy McGuffin writes:
In response to the CM reader that has spotted a white deer with black spots, it is most likely a piebald deer. This is caused by a rare genetic mutation that causes the deer to lack the pigment that gives it hair its color. There are varying degrees of piebald and I have seen some with brown and light black spots. It is not to be confused with albinism. The piebald deer still has normal eye color.

Here in Keltner we usually see one slightly piebald deer per year with either two white legs or one white leg. I believe about 1 in 1000 deer are piebald to some extent. To see a melanistic deer would be a rare treat, however. There are about 1 in several million of those, and they are entirely black.

Bible Word at New Life for the Nations

From Shirley Powell

Join me at New Life For The Nations at 6pmCT on Wednesday July 10, 17, & 24, 2024, as we dive into the Word and learn about the God who is still performing wonders (miracles).

Psalms 77:14 'Thou art the God that doest wonders. Thou hast declared thy strength among the poeple.' The God who Works Wonders in the Hebrew means, "the God performs miracles." Are miracles real? Yes because God is real. You cannot separate God from miracles or miracles from God! GOD wants us to be the conduits of His miraculous power. There will be prayer after each gathering!

New Life for the Nations is located at 5095 Campbellsville Rd, Columbia, KY.

Comment: asking if you've seen a white deer?

Message left on CM line:
I have seen a white deer with black spots and I just wonder if anybody else may have seen it. I will not give you my name or my telephone number because some redneck would use it to come and try to kill it cause it's white.

I check Columbia Magazine comments every day and if you say something on there maybe somebody has seen a white deer in northern Adair County. - Name withheld by request
To reply, click 'comment' below and let us know if there have been other sightings of white deer in northern Adair. Letter: Yield sign down

Calvin Claywell writes:
A couple of many options. One option: Install QUALITY SECURITY CAMERAS on each side of the Court House in the direction of the four streets entering/exiting the town circle. When the vandal is identified, charge the person five times the cost of installing new yield sign.

Second option: Do nothing, keep installing the flimsy signs. For the complainers of cameras in public of no privacy, there is no such thing as privacy in public, hence "public". Enjoy your privacy in your own space.

Give blood - the need doesn't take a vacation

Note: There's another blood donation opportunity on Tuesday, July 9:
Community Blood Drive on Tuesday at TJ Health Columbia

By Eric Lindsey

As fun as summer is, it's a tough time on the blood supply. Donors can ensure it's a safe and enjoyable season for everyone by donating blood at this upcoming Kentucky Blood Center drive. The next local opportunity is:

Wednesday, July 17, 2024 from 10:30am-3pmCT
Columbia Church of Christ Fellowship Hall

501 Jamestown Street, Columbia, KY

Between warm-weather activities, family vacations and no school, donations typically dwindle during the summer months, but the need for blood doesn't take a vacation. Summer activities often lead to an increase in accidents and traumas and a spike in transfusions.
