Danny Atwood, 72, Casey County, KY (1951-2023) Danny "Touche" Atwood, of Liberty, passed away on Wednesday, September 13, 2023, at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital in Somerset. He was 72. He was a brick mason and a US Army Veteran. He enjoyed listening to bluegrass music, watching baseball, and going to drag races. Danny was a hard worker. He had a caring heart and was a loving father and grandfather. Russell Co. DAR approved for $7,500 From Lisa Tolliver Frankfort, KY - The Kentucky Agricultural Development Board approved $1,138,643 for agricultural diversification and rural development projects across the commonwealth at its monthly board meeting in September. Among the awards was $7,500 for DAR in Russell County. Letter: Russell Building Joe Hare writes: Just noticed that the Russell Building in this photo appears to have a flat roof and a sign on the back of the building. Anyone have any info as to when it was changed to it's present shape. Carol Perkins: Keep the Party Going Previous Column: The Oxygen Line By Carol Perkins I am a Jimmy Buffett fan. My journey began with Judy, my lifelong friend, and my son, Jon. Jimmy was playing in Louisville at the fairgrounds during the eighties, so off I went with them to join a group of people I had never known existed: Parrotheads. Tailgaters, each with a beach theme going on around them, Buffett music blasting from giant CD players, and flying beach balls kicked off the party that would continue inside. I had stepped into an unfamiliar world. The stadium was set for the event. A wire ran around the perimeter with inflatable sharks sliding along it throughout the night. I didn't know the song "Fins." I also might have been the only one not wearing a flowery shirt, beach hat, and flip-flops. When he strolled out barefooted with his guitar hanging across his shoulder, the crowd went insane, showing love to this laid-back, carefree-appearing singer/songwriter. What had I been missing? LWC announces date for 2023 International Marketplace By Nathan Schweikhart Lindsey Wilson College is thrilled to announce that this year's International Marketplace will be taking place at 11:30amCT on Monday, October 16, 2023, in the backyard of the ISA House, 206 Lindsey Wilson St., Columbia, KY! The International Marketplace is ISP's (International Student Programs) largest event of the year! It will include food booths where visitors will be able to sample authentic cuisines from around the world, which are prepared by our very own international students! The International Marketplace allows students to showcase their culture, while also being able to interact with our community. 17 Gatton Academy seniors named National Merit Semifinalists From Kari Lynn Somers Bowling Green, KY - Seventeen seniors from The Gatton Academy of Mathematics and Science in Kentucky have been recognized as Semifinalists in the 2024 National Merit Scholarship Program, including Jess Christian Rara of Russell Springs. Since The Gatton Academy's inception in 2007, a total of 255 students have been named National Merit Semifinalists. Since students take the qualifying PSAT exam in October of their junior year of high school, much of their preparation stems from learning opportunities during their freshman and sophomore years of high school. The Gatton Academy builds on students' sending school experiences to provide them with preparation for the ACT(R) and SAT(R), critical components in becoming finalists. KELC releases August 2023 Unemployment Report From Mike Clark/Kim Saylor Brannock Frankfort, KY -- Kentucky's seasonally adjusted preliminary August 2023 unemployment rate was 4%, according to the Kentucky Center for Statistics (KYSTATS), an agency within the Kentucky Education and Labor Cabinet (KELC). The preliminary August 2023 jobless rate was up 0.1 percentage point from July 2023 and was unchanged from one year ago. The U.S. seasonally adjusted jobless rate for August 2023 was 3.8%, which was up 0.3 percentage points from July 2023, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. Volleyball: LWC sweeps Brescia Thursday The Lindsey Wilson volleyball team improved to 3-0 at Biggers Sports Center this season with a sweep of Brescia on Thursday. The Blue Raiders (7-6) hit over .350 in two of the three sets with a high of .429 coming in the third. With the victory, Lindsey Wilson has won five-straight matches at home all via sweep dating back to last season.
