Carol Perkins: Keep the Party Going

Previous Column: The Oxygen Line

By Carol Perkins

I am a Jimmy Buffett fan. My journey began with Judy, my lifelong friend, and my son, Jon. Jimmy was playing in Louisville at the fairgrounds during the eighties, so off I went with them to join a group of people I had never known existed: Parrotheads. Tailgaters, each with a beach theme going on around them, Buffett music blasting from giant CD players, and flying beach balls kicked off the party that would continue inside. I had stepped into an unfamiliar world.

The stadium was set for the event. A wire ran around the perimeter with inflatable sharks sliding along it throughout the night. I didn't know the song "Fins." I also might have been the only one not wearing a flowery shirt, beach hat, and flip-flops.

When he strolled out barefooted with his guitar hanging across his shoulder, the crowd went insane, showing love to this laid-back, carefree-appearing singer/songwriter. What had I been missing?

At one point, Jon leaned in and said, "He's singing the Songs You Know By Heart."

I replied, "But I don't know any by heart."

Jon rolled his eyes. "That's the name of his best album." It would be the first CD I owned.

Since then, I have attended many concerts with Judy, her family, Carla and Jon. We have sat on hillsides on sultry nights, during downpours and mudslides, and once when lightning should have sent us to the car.

I introduced my nephew to Buffett on the night of the flood in Nashville. We once had two the third-row seats at Starwood (gifted by a friend of Buffett's and a mutual friend of Carla's), and in our group of six, we rotated who sat there.

My children took me to a Buffett concert for my birthday at the MGM in Vegas, and then later Judy and I saw him there twice. One time, we went to the before party at the MGM. These people took partying to a new level.

Going to his concerts wouldn't have been the same without Judy, so I haven't been since her death. They both brought joy to the room and a party wherever they were. I wonder if Judy and his Parrotheads escorted him home with a "Cheeseburger" in one hand and a guitar in the other?

As Buffett said to his daughter as he was dying, "Keep the party going." The party may continue, but the main attraction will be missing.
